I'm not sure that it's more work than it's worth. Offering reasonably-priced upgrades may result in significantly more revenue.

Indeed - but the P fare likely also comes with a different set of restrictins (not that the passenger is likely to know or care).

At check-in, for ORD-DCA on a L fare, my 1K wife got an offer of $139 to upgrade to First Class.

At check-in, for the same flight, my offer was $773. The joke is that I'm on a Government Y fare.

First Class sold 6/12.

LAX-EWR-EZE return booked today for outbound tomorrow morning.

LAX-EWR (H) UA wants $1,100 or so for the last seat. No thanks.
EWR-EZE (H) $689 to P fare and took it

EZE-EWR (W) Upgraded at booking with GPU
EWR-LAX (W) Waitlisted

It's been a long time since flying UA intl. I totally forgot I could not upgrade within 24 hours of a flight departure. What a bitter taste since I could have used the GPU on the outbound and $450+25k miles on the return. That being said the ticket was surprisingly cheap at $1,550.

You can upgrade into open PZ, you can't waitlist.

$689 not a bad buy-up at all.

Huh. I totally forgot that I needed to be clear that the upgrade should only be applied to the PZ>0 segment and not both flights.

I did the whole trip multicity so I could manipulate each segment only to fall short. It really has been a long time since I’ve done this.

Anyway, $239 more out of pocket and saved 25k miles. I guess it worked out.

Seeing $649 (~£500) for LHR>LAX from an H fare to Polaris.

Pretty compelling, but it is a work trip that otherwise would have no cost to me. Any logic around when to pull the trigger on these?

I'd take that offer in a skinny minute. Now.

Friend had a $599 offer on PVG-LAX from a T fare. Obviously he accepted as it was a ridiculously low buy up amount from a $500RT ticket!

I think I know but worth asking...

I’m booked ORD to BRU in economy plus for an upcoming trip. Current cash upgrade for that leg is ~$8,200. Miles + points is $550 + 20,000.

Is that about as good as it’s going to get?
