Yesterday, purchased DEN-LHR-DEN H fares for late July. At purchase, offered $1554 upgrade on DEN-LHR, which I didn't take, and $599 on LHR-DEN, which I did.

Purchased UA flight using points. Fare code is YN. Will there be the possibility of a cash upgrade to a business fare if I used miles to purchase original fare? TIA

Yes. United will take money from anyone.

However, generally that option will not be available until check-in.

So they weren't interested in selling then.

$239 to PE, $829 to J
K fare
(I took the PE offer)
note that before check-in, the offers were about $1200 and $1500 respectively

IAD-GVA and GVA-IAD $599 upgrade to J each direction - shown at purchase (and still showing available 5 days later) for a U-fare ticket (over $3000). J fare is $8000+
Can't seem to get myself to pay that on top of the already crazy expensive flight! (but imagine I will be kicking myself later)

I would take it on the overnight direction. I would not take it on the day flight especially if I have a seat that I like.

I just upfared into P on a 2-segment itinerary (SFO-IAH-CUN) for less than the upgrade offer for just the first segment. 2nd time in 2 days (a few posts up, my upgrade offer was more expensive than the one-way full J fare!)

The moral here seems to be, always check upfare vs upgrade cost.

My last set of flights, I had the reverse - Segment 1 (LAX-ORD) upgrade was a bit over $240. Segment 2 (ORD-DCA) was somewhere north of $160. The total 2-segment upsell was around $420. Called 1K since the Segment 1 upgrade = Segment 1 fare class delta. However, the 1K agent would only offer the $420 2-segment upfare - which I declined. Ended up applying a RPU for the LAX-ORD segment - which cleared and then was CPU'd on ORD-DCA.

I just booked a fare to Austria. Ugh, forgot to use my vouchers.

In any event, the offers were 1600+ to Polaris for SFO-MUC-VIE and 1900+ for the return on Premium Plus, INN-FRA-SFO.

The fare plus those upgrades are about $800 more than the P fare for the route.

What are they smoking?

Or what do they think their customers are smoking?

What percentage of customers do you think (1) check the P price (2) know they can call to upfare and (3) are going to bother to call to do that vs. just clicking the button?

They are going fishing. Some number of people will click the button.

Why do they care? It's more work than it's worth to "fix" the offer price, and if someone ends up taking it anyway, they win.
