I think this is great news. I'm spending more of my travel dollars on buying First Class this year and this will entice me to spend some of it on United. The 800 mile threshold is a great choice, as is fixing the UAX gap. Plus, I have a BWI-LAX flight in F coming up in May that I'm now even more excited for.
I just hope there will finally be bread plates.

As one who mourned the loss of Continental, where I could have vegetarian meals, I noticed that none of the entrees that I saw listed, are vegetarian.

Nice revisionist history there. CO yanked special meals well before the merger, in 2003 in fact (7 years before the merger): http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/conti...ter-9-1-a.html
United had special meals going into the merger and they were removed after the merger.

[*]200 to 799 miles: Light breakfast refreshments (such as scones, muffins, or pound cake) on morning flights or a selection of premium snacks and fresh fruit on flights departing after 10:00am.
- Note that flights from Chicago O’Hare to/from Hartford, New York LaGuardia, Newark, and from Newark to/from Atlanta will receive full meals when scheduled during traditional meal times.

The PS flights meals have been stuck in a time wrap for more than a year.

(Also, I'm not sure why they bucked their trend of using unnecessary "of"'s and didn't call it "Ravioli of Tri-color".)

Perhaps at least a refreshed menu? If I have to choose between a "Short Rib of Beef", "Tamale-filled Breast of Chicken", or "Tri-color Ravioli" one more time I may lose it. I'm not holding out much hope given that they call out that horrid Tamale-filled Breast of Chicken in the press release.
(Also, I'm not sure why they bucked their trend of using unnecessary "of"'s and didn't call it "Ravioli of Tri-color".)

Now you can have the same on non-PS transcons:
New multi-course meal service on transcontinental and Hawaii flights, featuring heartier entrees, such as tamale-stuffed chicken wrapped in a corn husk and served with creamy corn sauce, roasted red and yellow tomatoes and yucca sticks
FWIW, the tamale stuffed chicken has been around for years: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/15398433-post21.html
Personally I don't mind it, I think it's pretty good.
Though I've seen people get offended because they don't pick up that it's a chicken stuffed with tamale, they think it's a chicken tamale and totally inappropriate for BF.
