bought 2 round trip nonrefundable tickets from SNA to EWR for travel end of July on United.
My pet took ill and will need emergency surgery. The time we would travel is the time she is going to need to recover. I called United and they said unless the illness is one of the people traveling there is nothing they can do.
We cannot go and will need to care for our puppy 24/7. Do I have any recourse or what are my best options being that we cannot travel and also do not know when if at any point in the future we can complete the travel.
any suggestions are greatly appreciated
thanks

Very sorry to hear about your puppy. I've moved your post to the United Airlines forum where it will get more views from those who are best able to advise you.

I'm pretty sure that if you cancel before you take the trip, you can apply the value to a new ticket (within a year of purchase), less a $200 change fee.

Sorry to hear about your puppy.
Call UA a few times and you might find a dog lover that will waive any fees. Good luck.
Do you have any "juice" with UA? If you do... Hint. Pineapple. If not, good luck.
I'm a dog lover, keep calling.
Good luck to the OP and fido.

Does your travel insurance cover pet illness?
Best of luck to your pup. We had this happen 6 weeks ago when our pup got hit by a car; it was on BA who also took the same stance as United has with you, traveler only.
Like others suggested, maybe you'll get a dog lover than can understand. Also if the medical bills are huge consider trying to fundraise, we used www.youcaring.com/littlelevi they don't charge any fees and we've raised over half of his $7000 plus medical bills.
PM me if you fundraise, even though I'm still paying my bills I'm happy to help another dog owner.

thank you for all the well wishes and sincerely appreciate all the great information. Will look into this and do all I can to get a refund if not hopefully United can issue us some sort of travel voucher.
I am sure I could just pay the change fee to change the dates of travel except since I do not know what those are going to be, do I just call them and ask for a 1 year travel voucher or just not show up for the flight?
Sorry never done this before and last thing on my mind right now is tickets...

Cancel your flights, and then use the "rebook" option when you have the new dates. You'll be required to pay $200 change fee per ticket + any applicable fare difference if the new flight is more expensive.Originally Posted by wallofiron

United won't let you cancel without a penalty just because your pet is ill. There's a reason why nonrefundable tickets are cheaper than refundable tickets...

what happens if the fare difference is actually a lot less for the "rebooked" flight? I assume I just lose that?

You need to cancel your reservations, then they will be in the "Inactive" tab in your accounts. You can rebook up to one year later and apply them to another ticket minus the change fee.Originally Posted by wallofiron

I would attempt to provide UA with iron-clad documentation of your pet emergency and throw yourself on their mercy. I think that you have a decent chance of getting vouchers where you wouldn't lose anything in value on future flights.
Good Luck!

So sorry about your puppy! Please see my PM in your inbox. I offered ways to mitigate the blow of the change fee. Most important, don't do a thing with the ticket until the day of flight. I outlined a couple of options from there, the most obvious bring that if UA cancels or significantly delays your flight, you will get a refund without issue. The other option is too cumbersome for full description here!Originally Posted by wallofiron

Perhaps at SNA. Try EWR. Good luck? I still say call (with status). It has been done before. Trust me. Aloha!Originally Posted by sahiljain22
If its easy, you can goto the airport and request at the counter. Sometimes they are more accommodating on cancellations.
No need to cancel right now. If there are weather issues, or other problems, you may be able to cancel and get a full refund. If you cancel right now, you won't be eligible for a refund if there are problems later.
But you do need to cancel at some point. Not sure what the cut off is, but it needs to be before the scheduled departure time. After that, as others have said, you can schedule a new trip, but you'll have to pay the $200 change fee.
Think of it this way. Over the long run, you'll save a lot of money buying non-refundable tickets. Every now and then, something happens and you have to pay $200. Overall, you're still way ahead.

these are the best advice. You can wait until the last hour or even less before canceling. With EWR and thunderstorms, you never know if you'll get a weather waiver. Good luck with the pup.Originally Posted by flyingnosh
