I'm pretty sure that if you cancel before you take the trip, you can apply the value to a new ticket (within a year of purchase), less a $200 change fee.

My pet took ill and will need emergency surgery. The time we would travel is the time she is going to need to recover. I called United and they said unless the illness is one of the people traveling there is nothing they can do.
We cannot go and will need to care for our puppy 24/7. Do I have any recourse or what are my best options being that we cannot travel and also do not know when if at any point in the future we can complete the travel.
