You need to cancel your reservations, then they will be in the "Inactive" tab in your accounts. You can rebook up to one year later and apply them to another ticket minus the change fee.
I would attempt to provide UA with iron-clad documentation of your pet emergency and throw yourself on their mercy. I think that you have a decent chance of getting vouchers where you wouldn't lose anything in value on future flights.
