Official size as per Rule 23.B.2, Baggage, Contract of Carriage:
https://www.united.com/web/format/pd...f_Carriage.pdf

Carry-on Baggage must not exceed the Maximum Outside Linear Dimensions of 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm), which includes its wheels and handles.

Personal items must not exceed 9 inches (22 cm) x 10 inches (25 cm) x 17 inches (43 cm), which includes any wheels and handles.

A personal item that exceeds these maximum linear dimensions but is not greater than 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm) will be considered as Carry-on Baggage. Carry-on Baggage or personal items suspected of being oversized may require being placed into a sizing unit to determine acceptability. Carry-on Baggage that exceeds the Maximum Linear Dimensions allowed or that exceeds the Carry-on Free Baggage Allowance will be considered as Checked Baggage and is subject to Checked Baggage service charges.
Under the 2013 contract of carriage, which is still valid for various tickets outstanding, the cabin baggage rule states a maximum of 45 linear inches combined for the LHW dimensions with no given side exceeding 22 inches. For such tickets, the cabin bag sizers are not lawfully applicable if the LHW combined linear inches don't exceed 45 linear inches and no side of the bag exceeds 22 inches. In other words for tickets issued last year, some bags allowed under the contract of carriage don't fit in the sizer without sticking out on at least one side.

6am DEN-SFO today, there was a lengthy announcement about carry on policy, no more than two, please consolidate, etc. Something that sounded scripted, and much more specific and detailed than anything before. Then the first two folks board, during the "pax needing extra time" phase. She has a properly sized roll-aboard, plus an over the shoulder duffle that was big enough for a 5 night adventure. Clearly that was 1 bag oversized for a "personal item" and even though that big ol' speech took place, nothing was said to this pax about her stuff.

One datapoint. Just reporting what I saw, before I boarded with Group 1.

same here: LAS-IAH-EWR (not boarded my EWR-LHR flight yet so am anxious to see what happens there) March 1: Lady came on with 36 () bags the size of my Golden Retriever--well, maybe not 36 but several--and nothing was said, even as she became loud and incensed at no overhead space for Group 4 or 5. Annct made before boarding but was just a scripted response.

GA here at SFO (UA 552 SFO-PHL) just made the carry on announcement and specifically mentioned the 45 linear inches rule...

So based on the scripted announcements, what I am seeing is that UA has issued the directive for strict enforcement but GAs don't want to argue with pax (as will inevitably happen) so they are going through the motions but not actually enforcing the policy.

Typical UA.

When UA does not see the revenue increase they predict they will do more to force the GA's to enforce.

The only ones that cannot do this, regarding coats, jackets etc are bulkhead seats, they do have to go in the bin, don't think the FA's are going to hang them in a closet, but one never knows.

Not disagreeing at all, but when elites are forced to check bags that have not been a problem in hundreds of previous flights they'll get $0, and lose the elite's business. The kettles mind less because every airline screws them over, just each one slightly differently.

Agents are obviously a lot smart than the idiots currently running the company.

This makes one wonder, if they have a revenue projection from this activity and how did they even come up with the parameters for it and how much did it cost them to figure it out.

Good for you!

I don't know about you, but I've got really nice clothing and I don't throw them on the floor and put my feet on them.

Btw, almost every impromptu announcement have the f/a's asking passengers to please place their jackets and sweaters on top of their carry-on's which are stowed in the overhead.

I would say one key parameter is whether or not the aircraft boards faster. If it does, they can increase utilization.

Ha, that's funny. Between weather, congestion, cleaning crews, the computer not being able to give weight and balances and just stuff breaking- boarding issues with bags are pretty low on the list of reasons that flights are late.

With load factors where they are and them adding slim seats to add more people, issues with not enough space for bags are going to crop up. A few bags here and there aren't going to make a difference, it will just transfer the start of gate checking from group 4 to group 5.

For the 'thirty minute' standing in line to make sure your bag gets on, if GAs would make sure that all of group X got in line before calling group Y and keep gate lice from gumming everything up, that would make sure that frequent fliers got their bags on.

My wife was up until this February a 1K but due to different travel needs for business client projects dropped back to Gold and boarding group 2.
Thought I would add that on Saturday my wife got the usual post flight survey from UA that many of us get and she filled it out in the most negative way explaining her feelings of being threatened by the gate agent that he would make an example of her and refuse her right to board, that he picked her as a petite woman in her 60's and in boarding group 2 when he had not hassled anyone in group 1 and that he never gave her the option to put the backpack in the sizer; he told her that the suitcase would get checked or she would have to find another flight home. She also noted that many male passengers boarded after her and she saw them putting their roller boards and backpacks in the storage bins, backpacks just like hers. She also wrote a well written letter explaining in detail the agent's actions and submitted it to United Customer Care dept. Unfortunately because she just dropped back from 1K to Gold she could not call the 1K line.

To add insult to injury she didn't notice until she got home that her small hard shell suitcase got cracked while being transported as checked baggage but as she didn't see it until she got home she can't really do much to make a claim.

Willing to bet she won't hear squat from UA. Loving those "friendly skies"!!!

Thanks for pointing that out (the cut-out for the handle).
