Official size as per Rule 23.B.2, Baggage, Contract of Carriage:
https://www.united.com/web/format/pd...f_Carriage.pdf

Carry-on Baggage must not exceed the Maximum Outside Linear Dimensions of 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm), which includes its wheels and handles.

Personal items must not exceed 9 inches (22 cm) x 10 inches (25 cm) x 17 inches (43 cm), which includes any wheels and handles.

A personal item that exceeds these maximum linear dimensions but is not greater than 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm) will be considered as Carry-on Baggage. Carry-on Baggage or personal items suspected of being oversized may require being placed into a sizing unit to determine acceptability. Carry-on Baggage that exceeds the Maximum Linear Dimensions allowed or that exceeds the Carry-on Free Baggage Allowance will be considered as Checked Baggage and is subject to Checked Baggage service charges.
Under the 2013 contract of carriage, which is still valid for various tickets outstanding, the cabin baggage rule states a maximum of 45 linear inches combined for the LHW dimensions with no given side exceeding 22 inches. For such tickets, the cabin bag sizers are not lawfully applicable if the LHW combined linear inches don't exceed 45 linear inches and no side of the bag exceeds 22 inches. In other words for tickets issued last year, some bags allowed under the contract of carriage don't fit in the sizer without sticking out on at least one side.

Very useful options when you're going to Europe. Thanks.

Oh I went back.....I like hanging my personal item bag off a 2 wheel trolley and dragging it behind me. An old habit that won't die. Besides, I always fear that 4 exposed wheels will no doubt break off at some point if gate checked.

I despise MOLAs, but in this case, they tell the truth.
First, despite multiple requests by myself and others, no one has cited a single instance of enforcement against an airline for not being strict enough. I think that's pure fantasy invented by the rules-are-rules people. The FAA has enforcement discretion and knows how to use it.

Second, I (and others) completely disagree that it's honest to promulgate one's own rule, get it blessed by the FAA, and then blame the FAA for the rule. Which is what's happening. It's dishonest and disgusting.

And the whole the-employees-don't-know-better argument is BS. UA should train them not to say things that are dishonest.

It's the Dulles sizer situation all over again.

Speed and stability first.
I got rid of my spinners because I kept missing my flights as I stared at it spinning around at the gate. I have a very short Attention sp........

They did make great music in the 60s

Torque effect. You are not pushing on the center line, so you always have to give it a little twist to keep it in line. And as soon as you hit a change in surface - going from hard floor to carpet - you end up pushing the bag over because of the extra resistance.

Spinners work great on a perfectly flat smooth floor. Try taking one from the TBIT to T7 at LAX and then tell me if you still like them.

Good spinners still allow you to angle on their side and drag behind you, if need be

People toting a spinner next to them look like they're walking a dog.

Regarding the slightly off topic arguing about why we have to do this debate: I view this argument as either senseless or cathartic. The new deal is what it is. The question is how to live with it or, as some seem to be proposing, gaming the system. I'm not against that as I think my bags may not pass the "meniscus" test but unless the gate agent bends over or uses a straight edge to check for level, I don't think it will be an issue. Please post if you see either of these types of behavior from the GAs.
Spinners are ok if you NEVER check them. Problem is the bag has to be smaller for the bag to be carry-on size due to the length of the four fully exposed wheels.

For a check-in bag? Forget it. I had a wheel broken off on two separate occasions on a Rimowa bag.

And they take up an extra 'lane' when walking in already congested terminals....where as my 2-wheeler is mostly behind me and then I try to clip the 4 wheeler as I pass by.... Can you tell I'm watching a car race at the moment?

Now I feel guilty for starting this draggers vs. spinners war. The only thing that Iv'e mentioned on that subject, in the original post is: "Oh...spinners are out...not for me." when asked why (by ilovesprint)(by the way my phone works of GSM system), I've listed couple of reasons, those reasons are mainly a personal preference. As someone mentioned in earlier post, we are getting of the subject.
I have interest in this forum mainly to be advised/read up on the "crackdown" by UA. This coming Friday it will be my first trip, since the (infamous) crackdown.
If there is any one out there that tested the TravelPro Platinum Magna 22" rollaboard in the UA's sizer please let me know/please post your findings.
If I see some one at EWR with it, I will not be shy, I will ask to see for myself it it fits and post the results. (maybe even with a pic or 2)
TravelPro customer service department refuses to provide me that (top secret) information.

p.s. I will choose my word carefully for this modified quote/paraphrase I heard from an old wise man, " If it has bosoms or wheels, sooner or later, your will have problem with it"

What else are bored 'type-A's ' going to do?

You also mentioned that your reasons were personal preference? Since you're new to FT, you'll find out sooner than later that you will be told what your preferences are and that anything you think to the contrary is wrong! Welcome to the Friendly skies, er FT.

Got off the phone with my Dad and apparently it is the Maroon Coats (aka security guards) at EWR who are enforcing the new size requirements, but the odd parts was only the Maroon Coat checking the TSAPre line was.

He was sending people back left and right, he attempted to send my Dad back but my Father just scanned his BP on the scanner, the scanner made its the three beeps and off he went. The Maroon Coat followed him all the way up to the TSA Employee yelling you must go back and check your bag.

At which point he told the TSA Employee that my Dad must check his bag to which the TSA Employee responded no he doesn't unless he has something that is not allowed past the checkpoint and even then if he is willing to surrender the item, he can take his bag with him. The TSA Employee went on saying I told you (the Maroon Coat) twice now to stay at the entrance to line, you have no power over here and if you come over here again I am going to report you to your superiors.

So apparently the Maroon Coats (or at least that one) are attempting to enforcing the new rules.
