Official size as per Rule 23.B.2, Baggage, Contract of Carriage:
https://www.united.com/web/format/pd...f_Carriage.pdf

Carry-on Baggage must not exceed the Maximum Outside Linear Dimensions of 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm), which includes its wheels and handles.

Personal items must not exceed 9 inches (22 cm) x 10 inches (25 cm) x 17 inches (43 cm), which includes any wheels and handles.

A personal item that exceeds these maximum linear dimensions but is not greater than 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm) will be considered as Carry-on Baggage. Carry-on Baggage or personal items suspected of being oversized may require being placed into a sizing unit to determine acceptability. Carry-on Baggage that exceeds the Maximum Linear Dimensions allowed or that exceeds the Carry-on Free Baggage Allowance will be considered as Checked Baggage and is subject to Checked Baggage service charges.
Under the 2013 contract of carriage, which is still valid for various tickets outstanding, the cabin baggage rule states a maximum of 45 linear inches combined for the LHW dimensions with no given side exceeding 22 inches. For such tickets, the cabin bag sizers are not lawfully applicable if the LHW combined linear inches don't exceed 45 linear inches and no side of the bag exceeds 22 inches. In other words for tickets issued last year, some bags allowed under the contract of carriage don't fit in the sizer without sticking out on at least one side.

Announcement made about carry on bags not to exceed 45 linear inches but zero enforcement of bags which obviously would not fit in the 2 sizers (and yes, there were a lot of pax with "carry-ons on steroids" as I saw them in the gate area and then saw them walk by my seat with their carry-ons)

I'm assuming food to be consumed on board and reading material does not count as a bag. Correct?

Correct. Has been discussed frequently in this thread and is shown as an exception in the policy on the website.

Right.

Though there is a report upthread if a GA deciding that a magazine in a plastic bag is a carryon.

You know what's great about this policy? The opportunity for GAs to make up more fake policies.

Just unreal.
Enforcing the no 3rd carry-on - easy to understand and enforce.

Enforcing the bag size rule - complicated and harder to enforce.

Now why is anyone surprised that the current management team took the latter approach instead of the former approach?

All the magazines that you can carry out of the UC definitely DO NOT count towards your entitlement. The same would be true for as many Milano's and Walker's, that you can manage to juggle while boarding.

Any of the above items (including mini-carrots, and cocoa) secreted in one's pockets, carry on's, or stuffed inside loose fitting clothing would also not need to be sizerized!

Interesting they are using the linear restriction when making announcements today. Seems like they are contradicting themselves...(not surprisingly for UA).

A couple months ago UA added the linear limit to the automated announcements at EWR. They affirmatively added it. It strikes me as odd given that now they've decided to abandon that standard.

New United Carry-On Sizer and Enforcement of Policy (eff. 1 March 2014)

Just got on UA282. Announcement before boarding that a passenger may only carry on 2 items, etc.

No enforcement of bag size in BG1. Not sure about the rest.

Look, it's very likely that they don't understand the difference. That is why trying to argue with a GA about meeting the standard, but still not fitting in the sizer (e.g. a 12 x 12 x 12 gift box), would be a completely fruitless exercise.

Yet, somehow, every single Fedex/UPS agent can understand the simple linear inch concept. Of course, their billing inherently depends on DIM weight for air shipments.

Supposedly, the Walker's and Milanos have been removed systemwide to be replaced by unpackaged bulk cookies.

Lots of gnashing of teeth in this thread:

Hardly archaic. Think of the poster as a billboard. At a poster session, which usually takes place in a large room with a number of others doing the same thing, one stands by his/her poster, ready to discuss/answer questions with those who pass by. It's not a simple one-off presentation via a projected Power Point, although one could simulate a poster by pinning a bunch of print-outs to a cork board [but I digress].

^ Hollowed-out book safes are already for sale all over the Internet and maybe some entrepreneur will market bulk fast-food bags - supersize of course - to frequent flyers.
