Is it possible to upgrade only one segment?
I have the following segments booked and paid:
UA4299 DCA - EWR 18:00 10 Jan - 19:21 10 Jun
UA 568 EWR - IAH 21:19 10 Jan - 12:09 11 Jun
UA 201 IAH - GUM 09:45 11 Jan - 18:00 12 Jun
UA 183 GUM - MNL 18:50 12 Jan - 20:45 12 Jun
UA 184 MNL - GUM 23:35 13 Jan - 05:25 14 Jun
UA 200 GUM - HNL 06:50 14 Jan - 17:55 13 Jun
UA 218 HNL - ORD 19:25 13 Jan - 08:29 14 Jun
UA 608 ORD - DCA 09:51 14 Jan - 12:42 14 Jun
All indicate a fare class of L. On the UA site I am offered the chance to upgrade the first four Xor the last four segments at a price of USD$600.00 PLUS 30,000 MP Miles. Xor I can upgrade all eight segments for USD$1,200.00 PLUS 60,000 MP miles. No other option is offered and most of the segments are listed as 'waitlist only'. I don't want to spend those kinds of resources on this set of flights but I had a passing thought that it would be nice to try out the Global First product on a single segment. I have no status, though I could by silver. I don't think that would be of any help. I do have the MP Explorer card and the old CO OnePlus card. Which I also do not think will help.
Is there a cost effective way of attaining an upgrade on a single segment to the Global First cabin?

The only segment with a GF cabin is IAH-HNL (it looks like the IAH-GUM stops in HNL with an equipment change). I haven't flown that route on a 3 cabin plane, but I'm guessing since HNL is normally a modified full service (on 2 cabin planes it's BF lite) that you won't get the true GF product. Plus you'll be upgrading from coach so you'll only get to business (you can't double upgrade). All that being said, I THINK you can use 1 regional to get 1 cabin upgrade all the way to MNL if you can find someone to sponsor you. Others who fly to Asia more will chime in I'm sure.

I checked the IAH-HNL portion of UA201 and the seat chart shows United First, United Business, Economy Plus and United Economy. So, you may be correct that there is not Global First cabin/service on that flight segment.

You can't do a two cabin upgrade from Y to GF anyway.
IAH-HNL is currently sUA 3cabin, but HNL-GUM is sUA 2cabin (the plane from ORD-HNL). Plus upgrading "direct" flights like that is a PITA.
But nice mileage run you got, adding more than 2000 miles to the shortest UA/*A path.

The trip isn't a mileage run. I am going to the Philippines on personal business. I had a voucher from UA that was going to expire. The voucher required that travel only be on UA metal and this was the least expensive option I could find at the time of booking.

$600 + 30,000 miles upgrades on transpac flights are generally good for all segments that takes you from point A to point B. In fact you are lucky that you can get upgrades on all segments. Sometime your upgrade only clears on one segment but the $$$ and miles are not refundable (as long as your get upgraded on the transpac segment).
For example, I've used the same $600 + 30,000 miles for LAX --> NRT --> HKG but only got the upgrade for the LAX --> NRT segment (the segment that really matters). There is no refund of $$$ or miles.
I am quite positive that there are no ways to pay a lesser amount of $$$ and miles to upgrade only a selected segment. I'm sure that someone who is more experienced in transpac flights will chime in.

Some of these responses have me somewhat concerned - I'm flying ORD-->SIN via HKG next month using $600 + 30k miles for an upgrade as well - the HKG-->SIN leg cleared already, but the ORD-->HKG leg is still waitlisted (obviously, the one I'd rather see clear.) I was wondering about this, so I called the premier line to ask what happened if the first leg didn't clear. She said that I would be refunded the difference in miles and cash (the second leg would only be 20k miles and $75) between the two. Is that not the case? Not about to pay $600+30k miles for the second (short) leg only..

Looks like a missed a key phrase on the response above mine - 'if you're upgraded on the transpac segment'. Assume that would be the difference in being refunded or not.

I am not able to confirm upgrades on all segments ...
most of the segments are listed as 'waitlist only'.
For 60,000 miles + $1,200.00 I could travel roundtrip in coach, stay at a decent hotel and pay for most of my other expenses for a week in the Philippines.

I got upgraded from LAX --> NRT hence no refund even the NRT --> HKG segment could not be upgraded.

... but in any case I do not want to spend an ADDITIONAL $600.00 PLUS 30,000 miles one way.
