5 April 2018 -- UA started posting an "expiration date", appears to be at least 18 months after most recent activity (some are longer for unknown reasons)
also states
Expiration had previously been in the T&Cs for some time (2 years of inactivity? but now is 18 months) and had stated an ETC would be issued if the funds did timeout. Unclear if that still applies.
The Gift Registry has been disabled since Fall 2017 (Sept?) (appears this may be related to a tax issue?)

If you book an award ticket, does the $5 or $10 charge count as a booking that gets a $5 credit?

And if it is only this what's the point of the program and why is it displayed so prominently?

When I can, I'll book one-ways instead of round trips. That gains me a couple of things.
1.) If I need to make changes to the itinerary, it keeps the fare rules simple.
2.) Since each booking puts $5 in the kitty, it really only takes me 2 1/2 trips to break even. After that, it's free money.... And that's my favorite kind of money.
Over the years, it's paid for several personal trips for myself and family.

I'm in. There appears to be no downside as long has you purchase 5+ tickets per year. Wish I knew about this a year ago when I started flying Continental.

Just signed up as well. I didn't see any downsides either. If someone does know of one, please let us know.

One "downside" is that if there are any irregularities with your ticket (irrops, SDC, SDS, partner metal) it can cause the credit not to process; this can be a headache to keep track of when you have a lot of mixed-metal itineraries, especially recently with the merger. (Case in point: I am waiting for $80 in credit for 16 UA/CO mixed-metal itins over the last three months. I have had to write in multiple times to get this addressed.)
Additionally, you have to complete the travel, so don't use this for hidden-city / point-beyond ticketing.
ETA: Oh, and it has to be a website purchase, so if UA keeps airport-redeemable VDB vouchers then tickets booked that way won't work either.

Exactly. The ticket must be purchased by you while logged into your account on the (new UA) website. You don't even have to be the one traveling, but you do have to be the one booking and purchasing.

So basically it's a kickback scheme where the airline is helping me to embezzle small amounts of money from my employer?

Ok, now I understand what it is for the most part. Where do you actually sign up for this?

Thanks for the explanation. I take it from the comment about needing to complete the travel that it doesn't post until after the itin is complete? How long after does it normally take to post - same time as the miles or longer?

Usually same as miles. It seems to happen at midnight a day or two after the flight, though I don't always pay too much attention other than to make sure it is there eventually.
