It's not worth asking. They theoretically can see it, but (a) often give vague/unreliable information ("it looks good!), and (b) it's not that meaningful because everything can change in an instant (GS waitlists his family of four ahead of you).

W fare

#5 or 6 on waitlist at departure. Several 1Ks were surprised that this flight was booked completely full on a Thursday.

We're screwed

SFO-PVG 5/5 747
Me and wife (both 1Ks) have been waitlisted with GPUs on a V fare since 1/1.
Up until a couple weeks ago it was C9 with 23 seats open in Business, about 9 open in First.
Now, C0, F1, with seat map showing about 6 F open so must have oversold Business.

However economy is pretty wide open with many whole rows empty in the back and we smartly booked an aisle and window in E+ with the middle open and hoping it stands.

I don't know what happened to book that much C so quickly. This is a monday flight which I knew was risky ... the tuesday flight has many open C seats.

Very glad we didn't pay extra for the V fare. It turns out at the time the V fare was the cheapest fare I have seen in the past year.

UPDATE: FAIL. No upgrades for either of us. All upgrades from C to F cleared and only a couple upgrades to C cleared. We had one person in front of us left on the list after the first two cleared.

I was able to book MFR-SFO-PVG RT Biz class for only $3700 a while back. I'm sure it was even cheaper from SFO. I think if I had paid up with upgrades + 40,000miles it would have been around $3000 -- plus no bonus miles.

flew 840 syd-lax 28/4.

3rd on waitlist, I didn't get GPU upgrade, now batting 1 for 3 on this flight this year, whereas all previous flights last year was 4 for 4.

Very odd stuff going on here. 6 empty biz and 2 first seats, existed 24 hours out.

I'm flying in from Wellington to link up and caught in Catch 22 situation. On 016 ticket can't checkin 24 hours before departure on United site because first flight is Air NZ. Air NZ won't allow 24 hour online checkin because UA ticket and visa check. Which seems to drop my 3 month old GPU waitlist for 24 hours while others jump queue until I can check in at gate. Seems to be a glitch in software handshake with ANZ and UA.

AFAIK, if calling in when R>0 at T-24 to confirm your upgrade, hold off on checking in. People have called in and gotten their upgrade confirmed first and then proceeded to check in (airport/online). In your case, since you were not able to check in, if R>0, you should have been able to get an upgrade if your GPU was WL

Batting 1 for 7 on BF-equipped flights in 2014. The 1 was on the previously CPU-eligible SIN-HKG, but I chose to ride in economy when it became clear the TPAC leg wouldn't clear rather than burn the GPU. The failures were:

DEN-NRT
NRT-SIN
HKG-ORD
EWR-LHR (x2)
LHR-EWR

In the nearly 15 years I've been a heavy United or Continental flyer, this is the worst GPU/SWU clearance rate I've experienced. Last year was second worst. At least for my flying patterns, the downward trend in the value of this benefit is obvious.
