Y fare Upgrades?

Continental has the great feature of an instant upgrade (if a seat is available) on purchase of a Y fare, for elites.

Is this going away with the merger? As far as I know, UAL has nothing like this and upgrade odds are left to be battled out int he windows. Personally, a 1P or 2P paying $1000 should have the upgrade before the 1K paying $200.

Upgrade benefits in the 2012 MileagePlus program
On select flights, a Premier member traveling on a full-fare economy Y- and B-class fares may be eligible for an instant upgrade as early as time of ticketing. Additionally, Premier 1K® members may be eligible for these upgrades when purchasing M-class fares.

Y is basically the same cost as discounted first (A). For example, DEN-LGA next week is 2477 in First (A) and about the same in Y. Full first is 2800. B is 1600. Instant upgrade on B/M is a good deal but Y seems pointless.

Y is pointless unless you're working for an accountant's policy that only allows you to book Economy... smart way to keep the business of travellers working for cheap companies that are willing to bend the policy a little.

I'm sure there's another valid reason but that's only one I can think of.

So to clarify, as it currently stands, on UAL, if I book a flight in Y will I get upgraded at ticketing if there are seats available in F?

Beleive that is true for full fare Y & F>0 but B & M require P/PN inventory.

which airline(s)?
UA has not offered instant upgrades (unless you booked a -UP fare), however this will start 3 March for UA. It has been CO policy for a while.

How many miles for FLL-EWR flight with stop in ORD on same flight number?

Hi! I hope I'm not interrupting a discussion but I have a question that I'm sure somebody with more experience will be able to answer:

I got a good deal on a CO-operated flight (booked as a UA code-share) from FLL to BOS with a stop-over in EWR. So far, so good. Now I think the reason it was so cheap is that FLL-EWR is via ORD, which seems like an odd routing:
Depart:
8:30 a.m.
Tue., Feb. 28, 2012
Fort Lauderdale, FL (FLL)

Arrive:
3:25 p.m.
Tue., Feb. 28, 2012
New York/Newark, NJ (EWR - Liberty)

Flight Time:
6 hr 55 mn

OnePass Miles/Elite Qualification*: 1,073 /100%

Flight: CO1574
Aircraft: Boeing 737-800
Fare Class: Economy (G)
Meal: Snacks for Purchase
No Special Meal Offered.
1 Stop. Time on the ground in Chicago, IL (ORD - O'Hare) is 56 mn.
My question is whether I will really only receive 1073 miles for FLL-EWR and not mileage for FLL-ORD-EWR. I understand that this is the same flight number but I was in a similar situation with a UA metal flight last August when BOS-SFO and SFO-LAX had the same flight number, and were also displayed as a single leg BOS-LAX in my UA profile. However, there I got mileage credit for BOS-SFO and SFO-LAX separately.

Can anybody help me there? If I don't get more mileage, I might try to SDC for a later flight and stay in the sun a bit longer...

Thanks a lot!

CO policy and UA policy are different in this situation -- for a CO operated flight with a single flight number FLL-ORD-EWR will just provide FLL-EWR miles.

It's a February flight. Personally, I wouldn't book a flight through ORD in winter. If Chicago's your actual destination (or a stopover), that's different.

2P Checked baggage

I've seen this asked before but didn't see an answer... (But I confess not trying too hard.)

What will the "new" 2P checked baggage benefit be?
1 bag checked free when traveling domestic. That seems clear.
What about companions on same reservation? Do they also get a free bag?
And international? Everybody gets a free bag there. Do 2Ps get a second bag? Or do they just get their "1" bag like everybody else?

1 Bag everywhere including the companion.

Which airline, and domestic or international? This has only been policy on CO, not UA. It will be combined policy beginning March 3.
In addition, this is only the case on domestic flights. For international flights, the benefit of Y fare is no co-pay on mileage upgrade, but no instant upgrades.
