It was quite interesting to discuss this with the old man (age 74). He has flipped from wanting the cutting edge vaccine tech to wanting Oxford/Astra Zeneca instead. Why? Well as far as he can tell, while cutting edge seems to give better protection once bedded into the body, the more traditional approach seems to stop you getting sick sooner. I have the same bias. It probably started with a patriotic bias but now seems to be resolving to something more rational. What Pfizer came up with is probably the future though.

My friends have been begging me to come see them. I’m really hating COVID right now. I get tested every two weeks at work. I’m doing the best that I can to be safe. The UK is a lot worse off than my home state. As soon as it’s safe to travel, I’ll be on a plane.

I think Dailymail leaked it. Quarantine 10 days in hotel for high risk arrivals ( I guess mutant strain countries). This must be because they can't legally stop UK nationals from coming in despite banning non residents (e.g. South Africans, Brazilians, etc.)

You are confusing entry across the border with public health measures once you are in. There is no issue allowing UK citizens in but forcing them to quarantine in government designated hotels. No one has been denied entry in that scenario.
My expectation is all arrivals from certain countries will be subject to this. |

My expectation is all arrivals from certain countries will be subject to this. Yes that is what Dailymail says about certain high risk countries (Mutant strain ones). It's better than some ppl wanting all arrivals from all countries to be put in hotels, but I never thought that possible with the amount of people flying in. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ne-hotels.html |
They aren’t banning certain nationalities. Instead they are banning direct flights from certain countries. Atm that list is
Argentina The Azores Brazil Cape Verde Chile Madeira Portugal South Africa DRC Tanzania Nationals of these countries are not banned from entering the UK. EDIT: FWIW I think it looks like it will be all arrivals from specific countries who will be subject to enforced hotel quarantine. I suspect the specific countries will be those noted above. |

Hotel quarantine for those arrivals might actually be a smart move (for once).

If there is going to be an enforced quarantine, I hope the government start off with a subset of countries so they don't shoot themselves in the foot when it doesn't quite work and there are significant problems. Even in China where they have been doing the quarantine program for months the customer experience aspect can very variable as local officials and hotels work out the finer details especially around food supplies and personal deliveries. |

It seems like banning all arrivals from everywhere at the moment is still a strong possibility though correct? I hope it doesn't happen - but it is still a strong chance?
it’s one thing to boast on the media what you want to do, it’s another thing to actually implement it practically. The hotel quarantine for mutant strain countries seems most logical, the mutants are already in the uk anyway. |

not possible. Uk too reliant on international travel/trade and with 10,000 arrivals a day at a bare minimum during the peak of COVID with so many measures in place, not enough hotels to jail everyone upon arrival.

Arrivals are 10,000 a day now, but will not be at that level once hotel quarantine at passenger cost is brought in.
A lot of countries very reliant on international trade have strict entry restrictions and quarantine restrictions. |
You might recall early in this business (Feb/Mar 2020) that passengers from Diamond Princess etc were placed into enforced quarantine on return. The Holiday Inn Ariel was converted to an isolation quarantine hotel - and I presume still is as it is not available on the IHG site.
It is possible and has been done - and if really difficult times occur will be done very seriously. If any new variant were more lethal there would be a public clamour for it!! |
