having been in durham for a bit, it has been interesting to see a mass testing facility in front of the cathedral with a queue the times i've passed and also overhearing all the young'uns talking about their testing and avoiding people who have tested positive and lateral testing at parties drunkenly and in one instance a girl was positive which ended the party.

it was interesting just to hear how conscious these kids have been and how aware of it they are at least, and by most things ive heard, they are being rather active in avoiding situations of possible exposure.

sure its a small sample, but just an interesting insight and fairly different from what i see and hear around london. but then again, whenever ive gone beyond london, ive found people to be by and large much more respectful during the pandemic.

I can second this. In my circles in Glasgow, taking a lateral flow test before going out to meet friends in any setting, be that in or outdoors, has become commonplace. I have been at a couple gatherings now where every person took a lateral flow test before they left the house. It's not perfect and everyone (myself included) forgets sometimes, but it's better than going in blind and there is no reason not to do them.

People are also very keen to get vaccinated, which is great to see.

Last week I did quite a few Durham students. The general reason why was that they had tried to get the first available slot, and they could either take the train the Newcastle on 20 June, or wait for a slot in the Durham centre on 27 June. The ones I did were willing to dip into their limited funds to come to Newcastle rather than wait a week. In some cases there were end of term travel plans involved, but mostly it was a desire to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

We've been asked to run walk in centres for youngsters, since they may not have a GP or NHS number available to them. So in Newcastle there will be walk-ins at St James' Park on Sunday and Eldon Square on Monday.

I do feel that our rather enthusiastic youth (which I am classifying as 18-30) will really cement the UK’s position as one of the top performers in terms of vaccination rate. From what I understand, the USA has had vaccinations open to pretty much anybody aged 12 or over for quite a while now and their percentage of fully vaccinated adults is lower than that of the UK. Now that the youth in the UK have access to the vaccinations, I think we really will be in a very strong position with a very high percentage of the population fully vaccinated within just a few months of now. I haven’t met a single person in the youth cohort - myself and my friends etc all included - who aren’t doing anything to get their vaccine ASAP.

I just hope the enthusiasm of the uni youth I know is rewarded with a return to near normalcy in the fall. Currently the only firm thing daughter has heard is that September course selection advising will be remote..

Rt Hon Grant is on the defence this afternoon. Wonder how he got this one past Priti and Matt....

LOL. If Grant thinks that the UEFA "dignitaries" aren't going to hit the shops, bars and high end hookers he's really dumber than he looks.

i mean this is rich!

a govt minister saying that german requirements for UK arrivals to isolate doesnt make much sense and is not justified.

doesnt make much sense unless you are a UK resident returning home, that makes sense! completely justified! especially if fully vaccinated!

My university is preparing to continue a "blended learning" model because of the concern that many students will not make it to the UK because of travel restrictions. Also, our campus has no plans to be fully re-open (despite potential unlocking in the near future) till September , same as other London universities I know of.

I've heard of quite a few (English) universities that think large classes / lectures will be remote for all of next year.

There is no travel ban on foreign students. The Home Office has already said that those attending remotely won't qualify for student visa status from September onwards - and won't be able to join the graduate (work) visa scheme upon completing their degree. Of course there could be a u-turn, but the government could force universities to open in-person if they wanted to.

Correct, most students should be able to get to UK for fall. St Andrews has said they are working with local NHS to be sure that any foreign students (or domestic) who arrive unvaxxed or partially vaxed are brought up to full vax as soon as possible. But there has been very little communication about exactly what that means. Contrasted with my younger daughter who is at Berkeley where every lecture, lab or discussion section was marked as in person or remote prior to registration a few weeks ago. (All lectures over 200 students are remote, most everything else is in person)

My own St A student will be a fifth year MChem student primarily attending small lectures (I believe there are only about 30 students in her program) and doing dissertation research in her advisor's lab, so in person is very likely, but I feel for the underclassmen who are facing a great deal of uncertainty regarding the fall.
