Thanks IAN-UK. To be honest with you the idea would be to go somewhere we don't normally go and to stay someplace we don't normally stay at... Room ordering will suit us just fine.

It's going to be tough generating the drama of Easter Island in shut-down London

But it's a lovely idea: I'm sure you'll be fine!

Northern Ireland is going into a potential 6 week lockdown with a review at 4 weeks from the 26th December.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-55349545

A new lockdown in Northern Ireland will begin on 26 December, the executive has agreed.

Non-essential shops in NI will close from the end of trading on Christmas Eve in a bid to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Ministers will review the measures after four weeks.

Close-contact services, such as hair salons, will have to shut and pubs, cafes and restaurants will be restricted to takeaway services.

The first week of the lockdown, running until 2 January, will see even tighter measures with essential shops having to close each day by 20:00 GMT.

No sporting events will be permitted at all - even at elite level - with people being urged only to leave their home for essential reasons.

Now nutty Nicola and mad Mark will have to have to accept this challenge and try to beat NI with some draconian plan, then weak Boris will follow a couple weeks later cause 'nasty Sage told me to'.

Level 4 lockdown in Wales starting on 28 December

Wales will go into a level four lockdown, the highest possible, from 28 December, with some sectors closing during the Christmas period.

[P]eoole will be expected to stay at home, with travel only allowed for essential reasons.

From 28 December, public facilities and holiday accommodation must be shut, and wedding receptions and wakes will need to be called off

Pubs and restaurants had already been told not to sell alcohol earlier in December, and outdoor and indoor attractions - such as cinemas - are closed now.

But schools and higher education establishments will remain open.

The lockdown has no end date and will be reviewed every three weeks, beginning in January.

As well as non-essential retail, leisure and fitness centres will have to shut after Christmas Eve.

in addition only two households can meet during the festive period instead of three in the rest of the UK.

I found out yesterday that the Tier 3 limitations in London don't apply to most shops; on a brief walk on Chiswick high road I found the street to be packed with shoppers and places selling home appliances, Japanese knives, clothes and Waterstones to be open and doing a brisk trade. Basically only pubs and restaurants are closed. I'm feeling a bit baffled.

KARFA Dec 18, 2020 4:26 am

Restrictions on businesses are mostly around restaurants, bars, hotels, and indoor leisure. There aren’t any restrictions generally on shops since 2 December.

My obvious question would be 'why bother then' but what do I know...

What happens if the Christmas bubble is a cross border bubble, meeting in England? Is the Welsh component banned from joining it? Who is policing that?

To be honest some of the pubs around Shoreditch and Bethnal Green were having interesting concepts of takeaway, with beers being consumed all around their premises but not within the boundaries. It felt like a normal afterwork drinking sessions when I saw them.

The restrictions noted by NewbieRunner seem to be from 28 December, so do not impact on the Christmas relaxation period of 23-27 December

It's the same in Soho, with the added "benefit" of people peeing in every corner.

Except that the size of a Christmas bubble between 23rd and 27th will be limited to two households (plus a single adult) by law but I have not found the relevant legislation/amendment yet. The guidance states:

Between 23 and 27 December:
  • you can form an exclusive ‘Christmas bubble’ composed of no more than 2 households

All times are GMT -6. The time now is 8:50 am.
