Hi Folks,
I am doing a 8 hr layover (with TK business class) and would like to know, when do I need to be back at the airport if I go into the city for a few hrs ? How long does it take to go through security, etc ?
Also, if I am flying TK business class, is there a special line/lane where we can go in faster ?

There is a priority lane both for entering the airport and for the passport check and security. You could use entrance 5 for entering the terminal building and you would find the priority passport control booths on the left side of the checkpoint area.

For Istanbul Airport related issues; these threads are dedicated. I felt that it would be useful to write this post and stick this to the WIKI section of this thread as it has been really occasional these days that in these days repeated threads are being created by members and same questions are asked million times which %90 of them answered in WIKI sections of respective threads or around 10-20 post above the questions asked.

There is no restriction to be at the airport at a time period before your flight. You should be at your boarding gate until it's closed ( 20 minutes before departure ), otherwise there is no limits for other checkpoints as you are a connecting passenger. With no information about the day and time you are going to travel, I can't give advise on how long security and passport control would take. It could be either 5 minutes, either 1-2 hours if you're traveling on Turkish holiday season. If you provide the day and more information about your flight ( international or domestic, departure time, destination to clarify if you need extra document verification etc... )

I am flying out at 2PM with business class on TK35 to Canada on May28, and likely start driving back from the city at about 1030AM (is this time to early or late to leave the city ?)

Just remember to use entrance #5 at the airport (dedicated entrance for business class passengers) and use the fast track lanes where possible. You probably won't have too much time in the lounge as boarding for US/CA flights starts early (approx 1 hr before departure) and there is also a separate security at the gate.

On Arrivals, looks like fast track lane is on the right side of Passport control ?

Just something to add as I was traveled through IST couple weeks ago while traveling in J
Outbound HKG-IST-ABJ
When arriving IST I go to the hotel desk requesting day tour, got assigned with a hotel room instead. Got driven back to old airport area for Renaissance Polat Istanbul Hotel that I was picked up at 12:00 noon for my 4pm Departure to ABJ
Flight was changed from 737-Max8 to 737-900 for obvious reason. Completely full flight and they decided to leave 100+ bags behind at IST where mine was one of them. Arrived, frustrated and pro-active communication for bags didn't flew with plane.
Bags arrived 1 day later, applied for ~200USD emergency clothing for business meeting and end up receiving 100USD
Return
Non-eventful, arrived hotel desk and got assigned with 12pm tour, took 40 min ride on bus to lunch place and roughly 1.5 hour doing the tour. Choose to leave tour to stay behind. Cost ~280 Lira to take UberXL back to the airport and took around 1 hour with traffic

When you entered via Entrance 5, pass through Turkish airline check-in then it is the fast track immigration + security

There are 2 immigration area, 1 is for fast track (right) and the other side (left) is for everyone else.

I was through 10 days ago ... arriving in on TK , departing a few days later on Uzbekistan Airways
Just a few random observations
- The aircraft taxi times are indeed very long - on arrival we parked at one of the 'F' gates on the far side of the terminal from the runways ... and that took at least 20 minutes from landing to arriving on the gate .. makes Schiphol look quick ! ( contra to my above post it was a pretty straight in flight though with not much zig zagging ! )
- Immigration on arrival and security on depature ( non fast track) very quick and efficient
- The taxi lines outside the arrivals hall seem quite badly managed .. at a not particularly busy time ( about 430pm on a Friday ) there was a huge queue with one dispatcher and only a handful of taxis being allowed up at a time ( I'm guessing there were probably loads of them held in some parking lot ) - stood in line for nearly 20 minutes that was probably fairly pointless .. the pickup area is too small and the supply of taxis too erratic
- Taxi to near Galata tower cost 160 Lira including toll road on the way in and took about 75 minutes as traffic was bad .. coming back it was 110 and we didn't use the toll road .. light traffic, took about 40 minutes
- Whoever paid the concession fee for the Exchange counters clearly has more influence than the banks as it's a bit harder to find the ATMs on arrival but there are several at the Eastern end of the arrivals hall ( after you walk past the large exchange counters!)
- The drop off line for taxis at departures also seems a bit chaotic with an inner lane which they direct them into that's narrow and congested and then blocked about half way down where they push you back into the outside lane - wastes about 5 minutes of pointless congestion
- No comments on the lounge as couldn't use any departing on HY flight ... Uzbek Airlines used one of the closer gates to the runways (A7) - though quite a long walk from the security check and clearly in an area of the terminal that needs some more finishing work
Overall, impressive building ... clearly some rushed stuff done at the end, and not quite finished everywhere .. hopefully only to improve

I arrived around midnight from Cairo and departed for London the following day.
fabulous building but long long walks from aircraft to immigration. Huge number of baggage belts and all working well.
chaos outside with traffic, taxis and private pick up. Utter mayhem and spoiled the otherwise smooth arrival experience.
Chaos again on departure after a very pleasant 105tyr taxi from town. Battled our way across road to the terminal. In day time even more impressive building. Very efficient immigration and security but very long walk from Area C to IGA lounge.

Does anyone know if this is real information? According to https://www.flightradar24.com/data/a...s/ist/arrivals basically all flights to "IST" after 8 pm get diverted to "ISL". I'm looking at data from May 1st.
