TK free hotel room rules:
A complimentary hotel accommodation (maximum 2 nights) will be provided to our valuable passengers when there are more than 10 hours (for economy cabin passengers) and 7 or more hours (for business cabin passengers) waiting during their international connecting flights due to Turkish Airlines’ schedule structure. However, if your destination can be reached by an alternative flight to your first flight and the waiting time is less, you cannot take advantage of the hotel service. This service is not applicable when there is a shorter connection available within the time frame mentioned above. The first and the connecting flights must be with Turkish Airlines. All passengers must hold a confirmed reservation for the first and the connecting flights. Complimentary accommodation will be arranged with Turkish Airlines’ corporate partners and will be provided through the “Hotel Desk” located after the customs’ check point at the arrival. Passengers must check for any visa requirements when entering Turkey. In the event where a visa is not granted, Turkish Airlines assumes no responsibility for providing complimentary hotel accommodation.

1. Do You Provide Accommodation Services at Transit Locations to Passengers Who Have Connecting Flights?
Passengers have right to have free hotel accomodation only when there is more than 10 hours (7 or more hours for business class passengers) between two international connecting flights due to Turkish Airlines’ schedule structure for maximum 2 nights. Both of the connections must be with Turkish Airlines, reservations must be confirmed and transfer flight’s reservation must have done for the first scheduled flight. Hotels will be Turkish Airlines’ corporate hotels that will be provided though “Hotel Desk” office which was located at the arrival floor after customs. Passengers should have checked visa procedures in advance. In the event that they are not granted visas at the transit, Turkish Airlines assumes no responsibility for providing hotel services. Mmmm, we are connecting from BJV (within Turkey) to LHR via IST, and if we take the earlier flight from BJV we will still need to overnight in IST as there are no connecting flights in the late evening.
I think, to play safe, we should get the earlier BJV to IST flight that makes our stopover in excess of 10 hours.
thanks, Gordie

It doesn't work that way. 10 hours minimum rule applies to "no connection available". Since TK offers a flight at 8,5 hours, you will NOT qualify for a free hotel. Please read the thread about Hotels in IST for details. It has been discussed to death there.
You will need to book your own hotel rooms while in IST. TK will not provide anything for you.

I have learned so much from this forum so far. My sister and I arrive at 5:40am and 5:50am respecitively on separate flights, in business class. Our next flight to DXB doesn't depart until 12:25am. Trying to figure out the best thing to do:
1. Take the tour and use the lounge
2. Get 2 rooms for free and tour on our own
3. Get our own hotel, and get the free tour
For now, I have reserved a room at the Courtyard on points, which can easily be cancelled on day of arrival. Based on your experience, what will be the best option?

I would definitely go get sometime to eat on my own and skip the tour. I would skip the doner & kebap, this is consider "Turkish fast food." I would also pass on dining at Taksim, just a tourist attraction. Besides, currently have polis in full gear ready to battle against protestors. I would go to kumpali, they have many seafood restaurant along the seaside.
I have slept & shower in the lounge on numerous occassions .
YMMV

I booked a flight with a 23:55h stopover in IST eligible for a hotel. Now - a few days before the departure - I rechecked the booking and found that TK modified the departure of my connection by 15 minutes, so now I have a 24:10h stopover. What happens in this case? I wrote to the TK hotel desk, but no reply so far...

I believe the only circumstance that can prevent you from getting a free stay is if there's a later flight coming in fom BKK, or there's an earlier flight departing from IST to IAH that day
