Is Global Entry worthwhile?

So, I guess it comes down to what the inspector said vs your level of paranoia.

int -- if the TSA is capable of recognizing ID issued by its own government department. That's likely to be a stretch, though.

More Global Entry Benefits Coming
This email just received from CBP:
We are pleased to announce that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is partnering with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on a new Department of Homeland Security initiative announced July 14, 2011, that qualifies some passengers for expedited screening through U.S. airport security checkpoints.
This pilot program will be available to U.S. citizens who are members of CBPs Global Entry, NEXUS, and SENTRI Trusted Traveler programs. The pilot program will provide expedited screening through TSA checkpoints via dedicated screening lanes.
Additional information will be sent out prior to the pilots implementation, explaining more about the program and the necessary steps you will need to take in order to participate.
For more information and the latest updates, please visit www.tsa.gov or contact TSA at (866)289-9673.
Additionally, CBP would like to announce the availability of Global Entry kiosks at select Canadian preclearance locations. Global Entry kiosks are now available at CBP preclearance at the Vancouver International Airport and at Ottawas MacDonald-Cartier Airport. Global Entry kiosks will be placed at Montreals Trudeau International Airport and at Torontos Lester B. Pearson International Airport by September 2011. The placement of Global Entry kiosks at Canadian preclearance locations is the next step in the integration of the Global Entry and NEXUS Trusted Traveler programs.
The integration of the Global Entry and NEXUS programs began in December 2010, when CBP published a Federal Register Notice announcing that NEXUS members could participate in Global Entry. With the deployment of Global Entry kiosks to Canadian preclearance, Global Entry members will be able to take advantage of the program when returning home from Canada. NEXUS members will have the option of using either the Global Entry or NEXUS kiosks in preclearance. Further announcements will be made as necessary.

I got the same information today and it sounds like a pretty good deal to me. And no doubt when word gets out a lot of frequent travelers will opt to get pre-screened. I really hope it works out well for the Nexus, Sentri and Global Entry participants.

I got the email about 5 days go, and applied. Got approval on Aug 22, now am waiting for the card to show up in the mail. I assume there is nothing else I need to do except activate the card after it arrives?

Does anyone have any news/rumours when the Global Entry program expands to include more people than "U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, Dutch citizens, Canadian citizens and residents, and Mexican nationals." I am particularly interested in other EU citizens. Thx

OK, got my approval status and directions to schedule an interview. Here's the question: The interview scheduler says I can do the GE enrollment at Otay Mesa land crossing, which is considerably more convenient than LAX. (I would have done this months ago if I'd known I could do it there, rather than drive up to LA.)
The trouble is that Otay Mesa is quoting first appointments in December; LA has availability later this week.
Questions:
- Has anybody had luck calling an enrollment center directly and getting a "sure, come on down"?
- Has anybody gone through GE enrollment at a land border? Any downsides?
Thanks.

United Comping GE For Top-Tier Elites in '12!
UA announced the changes to their (revised) FF program for 2012, and one of the additions is that they will reimburse the top three tiers of their members for the cost of a GE membership fee! No details yet if this will also apply to Nexus or the other programs.
Great news for a lot of folks who may have been on the fence. ^ Curious to see if other airlines follow suit and/or what is the benefit to UA for doing such a thing?
EDIT: I just re-read the info on this and it says that they will "compensate" fliers, and that details on the compensation process will be announced at a later date. So very unclear as to whether this will be actual monetary reimbursement or some kind of voucher good towards travel (I am guessing the latter).

The benefit of the sticker is that you are supposed to be able to show it to cut some lines, but I've never run into a situation that called for it.
