Cross commuting with Nexus pass for work

Does anyone commute daily to work using Nexus pass using one of the bridges near Niagara? How is the commute like? Is it feasible to do so?

I can't speak from personal experience, or to the actual experience of it, but I believe this use is a major intent of the NEXUS program. There are thousands of people who commute across the borders daily for work between Detroit-Windsor, Buffalo/Niagara area, Blaine, etc.

Two words: Whirlpool Bridge.

It is NEXUS-only, and you need EZ Pass or a NEXUS toll account funded to use it. I use it a couple of times per year (and not as a regular commuter) but I have never seen more than one or two vehicles at the checkpoint at a time.

NEXUS interview process

Could anyone please suggest on interview preparation for NEXUS? About the interview and its entire process? Suitable location? Documents to bring along to interview?

If you have a completely clean background (no expunged records/prior arrest/run-ins with customs/immigrations in the past), then all you need is your conditional approval letter and follow the instructions on it. You may also want to bring any documents you listed in your application. There’s nothing to prepare for as all you need to do is answer questions truthfully.

When I had mine (5 years ago) it consisted of proving who I was with ID, getting retina scans and finger printed in their office, and then they showed me how to use the NEXUS terminal.

I was out in 15 minutes, and there was no "interview" process per say. No painfully uncomfortable wooden chair, hands tied behind my back, with a single buzzing bright light bulb hanging from the ceiling, or anything else.

My expiry was Jan 2019 so I applied for renewal. First time renewing. I just got notification as Approved, no interview required for the renewal! Yay!! Bunch of questions:

1) What do I do now?
2) Do they send me a card in the mail? Or do I have to click "replace card" to receive my new card/expiry for Jan 2024?
3) No new picture?
4) If I request new card, does it make my current one invalid(won't be at the mailing address for a few months)?

So many questions,

Thanks in advance

1. Wait.
2. Yes, dont' click replace.
3. No.
4. Yes, generally, so don't do this (see 2.)

Thanks! Will my card be available to activate when I get to it in a few months or do I need it forwarded to me to activate?

If it expires, can I just click request new card to my new mailing address?

Thanks again in advance :)

You should get the new card in under two weeks which you need to activate within 30 days. Once done, discard the old card.

The card they automatically send you must be activated in 30 days, otherwise they assume it was lost in the mail and cancel the card. Have it forwarded to you so you can activate it within the 30 day limit.

All - I need some advice.

I was a frequent traveler up until about 3 years ago when I changed jobs. I obtained a NEXUS in 2013, and it expires later this year. Since then, my employment has changed, my passport, and my address. I have updated this information on the US DHS site, but have not gone into a NEXUS office here for the Canadian side.

My job now requires some more frequent travel starting soon and I am looking for advice:
1) Do I suck it up and go to the NEXUS office and have them update my information even though some of the information should have been updated 3 years ago? Will they ask me why I didn't come in earlier and/or will they revoke my NEXUS?
2) Do I just let the NEXUS expire later this year, not use it, and reapply upon expiry?

Any other thoughts? Thank you!

PS - Yes, I am not proud of the above. Sometimes life and family get in the way :(

seawolf Mar 4, 2018 8:22 am

You can apply for a renewal right now if NEXUS is expiring this year and still continue to use NEXUS in the interim.
