Now, I want to book an interview before my next planned flight to USA in late May, for a medical conference.

In the letter, they list 12 sites - 8 Canadian airports and 4 land sites, for iris scans.

Only Halifax fits the bill for both conditions - so, I have booked it there for April 13. I would fly there in the morning, and fly back in the evening - on points.

However, I would prefer to go to a centre next month, by car - less cost, and perhaps less time. Landsdowne ON is available next month, but I do not think it offers iris scans; it is not on the list of 12 sites.

How often do we see last minute cancellations, and when in the day or night would they first appear on a web site. I would prefer to have an interview no later than next month, at YOW, YYZ, YUL, or one of the 2 sites in Vancouver (I have family there, so I fly and stay there several times a year).

PS- do the interviews finish on time - if I go to Halifax, I have scheduled the 20 min interview to start at 4:20 PM on April 13, the only AC flight on my air miles account I can take leaves 6 PM. I do not wish to use my
aeroplan account for this booking.

Halifax sounds like quite an excursion for a Nexus interview. I would just recommend getting it done somewhere without an iris scan. At least at YYZ, you can just walk-in any time without an appointment to add an iris scan.

As far as cancellations, it happens. I just tried to check once a day if I remembered and was able to move up significantly a few times.

Your interview time may vary. It doesn't take that long once it starts, but they can get behind or ahead. In my case it was both...the Canadians took me early and the Americans took me about an hour late.

Yeah, I tend to just keep it loose in my pocket until I'm through security. When I'm not at the airport, it's tucked into the deepest pocket of my wallet, but there are just too many people who might want to see it in the first 10-20 minutes at the airport to not have it readily available.

Iris Scan Locations

My Conditional Approval letter says "Schedule an interview an an enrollment center where the iris photo can be taken (see enclosed list)...."

The list at the end of the letter seems to list ALL NEXUS enrollment centers, both in the US and in Canada, but the NEXUS website says that the iris photo is not available in the US.

The letter certainly doesn't make that clear.

My question: is the iris photo available at ALL Canadian enrollment centers, or only at some of them? If only at some, which ones?

[Later] I found a list of centers that do Iris photos. It does not include ALL of the Canadian enrollment centers. But after having said that iris photos are not taken in the US, it lists Champlain, NY as a center where the photo can be taken! Can anyone confirm this?

Someone else may clarify but do you need iris scan if you are going to use Global Entry which scans your fingerprints? You will still need iris scan on the way back into Canada.
You may also want to consider a US interview site. Its been a while since I did my interview but I did mine at Niagara Falls on the US side and added iris scan back on the Cdn side. Perhaps there is a Nexus interview center on the US site (land crossing) closer to Ottawa?

Not all centers have iris scan. The US does not as they are moving to Global Entry which has fingerprint scan.
Some centers in the US (example Niagara Falls, US) does not have a iris scan. However you can finish all your formalities incl the interviews and then cross to the Cdn side where there is a iris scan at the Nexus office next to the nexus bridge. Perhaps something like this exists at Champlain.

Cancel Halifax and book Lansdowne. You won't get the iris scan there but you won't need it yet (read on).

Stop in at the NEXUS office at the Canadian airport before you check in. Present your NEXUS card and you can get the iris scan done without an appointment. Then check in and use Global Entry (fingerprints) to clear US preclearance. You can re-enter Canada with NEXUS because by then they will have your iris scan on file.

No need to go all the way to Halifax.

Odd; Landsdowne had an iris scanner when I did my interview there in October.

If one renews, it the expiration of the new card 4 or 5 years from the next birth day? Just wondering whether to re-apply now (notice came 6 months ahead of expiration) or wait.

Oops, right you are. The official list does indeed say so.

Even less reason to go all the way to Halifax from Ottawa.

My birthday is in May and I got the renewal reminder in November, 2012. I was processed and approved within a week (just a lucky opening in Ft Erie) and my new card has an expiry date of 2018. So it's 5 years from your next birthday.

But come to think of it, my wife should have had a reminder in January and never got one, even though her card expires in July of this year...

It seems that the renewal letter is a YMMV kind of thing. I did NOT get a renewal letter. When I mentioned this during the renewal process, I was told that it was my responsibility to apply for a renewal ("just like a passport").

Does anyone know the process to get a lost NEXUS card replaced?

I google'd and found website that states to logon to GOES account and selecting manage membership and to request new Global Entry card. It also states $25 fee required for replacement card. Doesn't state how long it takes.

Can I show up at the airport NEXUS office with my passport and get replacement card issued immediately?

Well the answer to your last question is definitely no. They don't produce the cards there. You can always call the local office, but I imagine a new Nexus card can be requested on GOES just like a global entry card.

I just went through this to replace a lost card.

You have to log onto GOES and pay the $25 fee. Your membership is then reviewed and over a few weeks (my duration was 3 weeks) you will get a note saying your membership is conditionally approved.

Here is the kicker--you are then asked to make an appointment for an interview, which as you probably know, books 3-4 months out.

I thought this was insane as I had a valid card, so I called the Nexus help desk and they responded that no interview was needed--instead I could walk into any Nexus office with my documents and they would perform a document check (similar to a document update) at which point my card would be sent.

It is a bit confusing, as the letter generated from the Nexus site clearly says you need to interview, but the Nexus person I talked to said that is false. Like so much about the program, there is little consistency!

I hope this helps.

This "problem" was reported previously on this thread but it is good to see it reiterated from a different location:

NO INTERVIEW NEEDED
