Is the AMEX Platinum card line shared with AC/Elite and above + *G?

It is shared - it's on the far left side - AMEX Platinum and AC Elite. It is not *G, at least that's what I was told at least once or twice - that AC Elite's are the only one who can use that line (and no *G sign). I've been denied in that line flying UA F, but another time I didn't have a problem going through when flying UA F. So YMMV.

I don't believe legally, you have to travel on your US passport though. As I said above, US allows, but does not recognize, dual citizenship. That means you can either choose to enter as a Canadian, or as an American, but not both.

The requirement is: A citizen of the US must enter the US as a declared US citizen.

Nexus, the TDC and Cigars

I am enrolling in Nexus. Even though the exempt amount of cigars are irrelevant of Duty paid status in Canada or not, is it true you cannot use the TDC or do you use it and not drop the card or what?

These would be under the limit for total $ and the 50 limit in all cases.

Basic question can I use the Nexus machine at YYZ and just show the printout etc., at the exit like normal with the white card or am I preempted from using the Nexus machine at all?

Dude or dudette, this forum is nothing but people spotting infractions. it's the air canada forum after all.

OH NOEZ!

The NEXUS machine quizzes you about what you wrote on the TDC. It is programmed to deal with whatever your answers are. There should be no situation in which you would not use the NEXUS machine. On the other hand, it has no latitude while an officer can choose to let you go. NEXUS is there to be used by all card holders.

You'll use the machine, and say yes to the question about being over your limit. It will then print you a card with a big $ on it (normally, it just has 3 numbers).

If there is a payment window, you take that card and your declaration to the window, tell them what you need to pay for, and they will either make you pay for it or let you go. Either way they will stamp your printed Nexus card so that the officer at the exit knows you paid/have been to the window.

If there is not an open payment window (looking at you YYZ), you'll show the card at the exit, and similarly, the officer has the discretion to either send you to secondary to pay or to just let you go on.

Of the 4 times I've been over my limit (generally a couple extra bottles of wine), they only made me pay for it once.

Similar experiences here. I've been over my limit about a dozen times, and they only made me pay once. Just be sure to declare it every time. :)

If I were to apply for NEXUS in the next few days, will I be given a temporary document indicating status that I can use immediately (like how you're given a temp DL) or do I have to wait the six to eight weeks for the official card? If the latter, what's the usual turnaround time for receiving the card?

rehoult Aug 27, 2010 11:22 am

1) You apply.
2) They perform security checks as required (takes generally 6-8 weeks, but can be less or more).
3) You then have an interview for the final ok.
3a) They take your picture for the card at the interview.
4) Card arrives in a couple weeks

They can't give you a 'temporary' card, because without doing the checks they don't know you're ok. It's not just a rubber stamp; people are rejected for Nexus all the time (I've watched a couple interviews go down in flames).

Ah, thanks. I would have figured that the interview portion would have been the same as when I applied for my EDL (where I was in and out in 15 minutes).

If you've been a good little boy it is.

Other the other hand, if they give you a list of questions and say something like "Start at #15 for me", expect it to go downhill quickly. Watched a wonderful interview in YYC last year:

Guy - "#15, have I ever been arrested? Yes."
CBP - "Next question"
Guy - "#16, have I ever been convicted? Yes."
CBP - "Next question"
Guy - "#16a, What were you convicted of? Trafficking cocaine."
CBP - "Yeah. You didn't put that on your application."
Guy - "Uhhh...."

Absolutely priceless. You could practically hear Apu saying "Thank You! Come again!"

You cannot use Nexus lanes or machine if bringing in Commercial goods.

Wouldn't the drug conviction have been found during the pre-interview security check? I doubt such an applicant would have been sent for an interview. I call BS.
