As a GE member with a residence in upstate New York, I naively thought that once the Canadian border opened (in August) I would be able to join Nexus. Paid the money (for wife and myself) and recently received conditional approval. The approval message says that you must schedule an interview and that if an interview is not scheduled within the next year, your application will automatically be cancelled. It does not say that centers will not accept interviews, that CBP invalidated centers in New York State and other places due to disputes, and that Canada is not processing Nexus applications. It does say that interviews can now be conducted online but it does not disclose that you can't get an appointment.
After trying for a while, I read the available news as well as this thread. As others have observed, it appears that Nexus is still not allowing new applicants. The majority of Nexus holders (77%) are Canadian and there is little motivation to accept new holders when the U.S. in general does not allow Canadians to cross the land border. Plus, as I noted in a previous post, the Nexus line at the land border is not open. But it would have been really helpful if the CBP would just provide accurate information. Why tell you to schedule an interview if you can't? That seems to be a waste of time. It's a big ask, but if CBP would provide an alert when interviews are actually available, rather than simply when one is conditionally "approved", it would be a lot more practical and convenient. Meanwhile, if you are thinking of joining Nexus, this is probably not the time, and if you do, please do not waste a lot of effort searching the calendar for available interview dates! I had hoped this would change when Canada started opening their border to US tourism, but you make a good point: It's traffic in the other direction that matters. I live in the US and got NEXUS mainly because twice the benefits for half the money seemed like a good deal, but it does feel like the closure of the US border to Canadians has made CBSA lose interest in the program. |
There’s no need to “search the calendar” since you can see on the main page that there are no available appointments for all locations. Takes all of 3 seconds.
No argument that it would be nicer to have this info on the CBP website, though https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/services...ments-eng.html calls out that enrollment centers are closed. That said, - nexus is half the price for twice the benefits - for renewals they had the same “you must interview within a year” and then simply extended it to two years - whenever interviews reopen all you’ll need is an appointment. That still puts you ahead of the line compared to everyone else so you can get benefits sooner. |

Agreed, yes it's a PIA right now, but once things do finally open up, you can do your interview and basically be set for life with Nexus for both sides of the border. Going with Global Entry now will only cause you to do Nexus again in a few years. So just wait it out. Not easy I know. Hopefully once the US opens up the centers will too (of course, Canada was the one closed for over a year first, but that's another story). |
Lol OP already has GE

I have NEXUS but I need to update my NEXUS (or rather the Global Entry side) so that it has my updated USA work I94 visa status (e.g. TN, L1, etc) on it. Can I go to a Global Entry office to do it in the USA or must it be NEXUS?

I went to my local Global Entry office today to update name, citizenship status and passports. They were able to perform all those updates even though I have NEXUS (not GE) and even though I have a pending renewal application awaiting conditional approval.
They did advise me that I would have to update CBSA separately, and that Canadian systems would be out of date until I do so. I was already aware of that, but they also said that with the US side updated, I should have no problems using the Global Entry and TSA Precheck benefits at US ports. |
Hello,
Does anyone know if Nexus and Global Entry is like the pre covid usual process or if there are limitations, changes or any shutdowns at some airports for the service in Canada/US? Thanks! |
I haven’t seen any changes in US airside arrivals.

Hi all. I'm a Canadian PR who recently applied for Nexus. I've just found out that I entered the wrong number for the PR card, using the ID No on the front instead of the unlabeled PB from the back. Has anyone else made this mistake? What happened to the application? Mine is still pending review.

Updating NEXUS Information
So I need to update my NEXUS account to reflect a change to my Passport/Visa information; however, you can only do this at Enrolment Centres, all of the Canadian ones are somehow still closed due to COVID. Anyone know if you can do the update at a Global Entry enrollment centre (i.e. ORD) instead? Thanks!

One thing they didn't do was remove my now-void green card. I figured that would be routine when adding a US passport, as the two statuses and therefore the two documents are mutually exclusive. But I guess not. I presume an interview invitation will follow any conditional approval given these changes, so I've made myself a note to ask for the green card to be removed at that time. I hope this is helpful to others who need to make membership/document updates while NEXUS offices are closed. |

So is applying for NEXUS currently useless?
Received conditional approval but seems like I can't schedule an interview. You would think with all the border guards from both countries that use to work at the airport in Ottawa would be available for interviews. Virtual or in person. If they can't do the interview process, why are they accepting new applications? |
