I recently got an email about the grace period being extended to 24 months because of how bad their backlog is but my renewal just went from submit to full approval in under 48 hours. I was actually kind of hoping it would take a little bit and come in right after my birthday since you get effectively six years if your approval is right after your birthday, which I stumbled into unwittingly with my initial application. But I didn't want to wait until the literal last minute to get my renewal in.

As long as the renewal application was submitted before the original expiration date, the renewal is for five years from the expiration date regardless of when they received the final approval of their renewal applications. The new expiration date for people who applied to renew their Global Entry membership after it had already expired was five years from the birthday following the approval.

There are plenty of examples of both scenarios in this thread.

Ah good to know. Definitely happy I put it in before then. Wanted to make sure I benefited from the grace period (which you don't get if you submit for renewal after the original expiration date) so better to have made sure of that than to try to fish to not deal with this again for an extra year given I have flying coming up that would have been after the expiration.

I filed for a renewal on the 22th of march, still pending review..... I am not an American citizen, could be that that doesn't help.

I posted upthread that I successfully renewed our expired GE cards. Mine had expired in June 2021, husband's in May 2021. I applied to renew on July 30, 2021 and both were approved on Aug 1st. The cards arrived this past week and I noticed that they are good until May and June 2027, so for six years.

I recall someone had posted a question earlier in this thread, or perhaps in another thread, asking about whether the validity was 5 or 6 years, depending on when the application was submitted, so wanted to give this data point. Really pleased to get this sorted so easily after accidentally allowing them to expire. We're set now for six years, but can apply for renewal in five.

GE is valid for exactly 5 years AFTER one's NEXT birthday. So, if you renew just a day after your birthday, it might look like you have 6 years of validity, but it is actually slightly less.

Not quite, the initial GE approval is valid for 5 years after your next birthday following full approval (generally a day or so after the interview) your renewal is valid for 5 years from the date of expiry of your initial GE approval

Our original GE expired on our respective birthdays in 2021. Our renewals expire on our birthdays in 2027 which is 6 years from the date of expiry of our initial GE. I don't know if it made a difference because our original GE had already expired, so the "renewals" were really treated as new approvals.

Unless there is a lapse in membership validity.

If a Global Entry renewal application is submitted after the original membership had already expired, the new expiration date will be five years from the birthday following the new approval. Of course, there is a risk that the tardy renewal application may take months to be approved and in the interim, the lapsed member will not receive Global Entry benefits as those members who applied for renewal on a timely basis enjoy pending the final approval of the renewal application.

Datapoint (Renewal). Applied Sunday night, approval notice Tuesday morning.

MSerforfun Aug 29, 2021 10:12 am

Datapoint, applied late July and application still pending. DH applied early August and application still pending. We have Jordan on our list of countries visited.

If as some have noted, you can "game" the system and get 6 years (instead of 5) with each renewal, after 5 renewals (25 years later) one would have gotten a full GE for FREE.

Set to expire in 3 weeks, I did my renewal on Sunday night and got an email today at 12:25am:

Your application for the Trusted Traveler Program has been conditionally approved. You will need to complete enrollment within 730 days of the date of conditional approval.

Schedule your appointment as soon as possible. If you do not select an appointment date by Thursday, August 31, 2023, your application will be deleted from the system. You will be required to resubmit your application and pay the application fee again.

So looks like I need an interview.

The only "uncommon" countries I visited were Peru and Jordan.

Yes, you need an interview.

In the meantime, pending the final approval of your renewal application, you will continue to receive Global Entry benefits for at least 18 months and possibly for as long as 24 months pending the final approval of your renewal application.

You may want look into the availability of remote interviews.

My previous Global Entry membership was set to expire August 11. I submitted my renewal application on August 2 and received notification of full approval on August 4. However I still haven't received a new Global Entry card, I still only have the one that expired on the 11th. Is it normal to not have received the new card yet nearly a full four weeks after the full approval of the renewal goes through? I just double checked on my trusted traveler profile to make sure it wasn't actually prompting me to make an interview, but indeed, it says my only remaining step is to activate the new card.
