Still managed by descendents of the original family, Bollinger owns some of the greatest Grand and Premier Cru vineyards that surround the village of Ay, near Epernay in the heart of Champagne country, which make up this splendid 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 15% Pinor Meunier blend that has extra long ageing in bottle to achieve the creamy elegance of long finish for which it is so highly prized. White Wine 2008/2010 D'Arenberg Olive Grove Chardonnay, McLaren Vale, Australia D'Arenberg founded in 1912 is one of McLaren Vale's most exciting wineries and "wild haired" winemaker Chester Osborne has a strong international following for his wines. This coastal region, with its dry mediterranean climate, is known for its wine and olives hence the name The Olive Grove. This chardonnay combines ripe flavours with freshness, this is achieved by careful blending of oaked and unoaked components of the blend. Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Marlborough, New Zealand Most Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wines are quite herbaceous with pronounced leafy characters. This wine is quite atypical as the grapes are predominately from Blind River in the Awatere Valley which is drier and less fertile than the main valley floor. The result is a lively wine with strong lemony character, bracing acidity, pronounced minerality and overall freshness. Tinpot Hut takes its name from an old mustering shed in the remote hills of the region. It is made by highly rated winemaker Fiona Turner. Red Wine St Hallet Faith Shiraz 2008 The Barossa Valley in South Australia is synonymous with Shiraz and is internationally famouse for these full flavoured reds with their distinctive spicy mocca characters and soft ripe tannins. St Hallett, and their winemaker Stuart Blackwell have played a major role in the promotion and appreciation of the regions "old vine" Shiraz vineyards. Faith is a draw from a number of vineyards across the region and is an excellent example of the Barossa style. Chateau Paloumey 2007 Haut-Medoc This classic and classy Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc blend comes from an esteemed estate that is ranked Cru Bourgeois whose vines are near to those of the famous Cru Classe Chateau La Lagine in the southern Medoc : dense carmine red, blackcurrant aromas and good depth of ripe berry fruit on the palate with an elegantly dry finish. OR 2008 Brolio Chianti Classico Tuscany, Italy The Ricasoli family built the historic Castello di Brolio in 1141 and the ancestor of current owner Barone Francesco Ricasoli laid down the rules for the wines of Chianti in the late 1800s. Produced principally from Tuscany's most famous grape variety Sangiovese that gives the intense ruby colour, the wine shows aromas of red berry fruit with liquorice spice, great depth of flavour on the palate with a velvety yet firm finish. 2008 was an excellent vintage that is now showing its best. Port Offley LBV 2005 Port Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) is a high quality Port from a single vintage that spends between four and six years in large oak barrels (known as Pipes) so that it is ready for drinking once in bottle. From Offley's Quinta da Boavista estate in the Duoro Valley, this superb Port is deeply coloured, with aromas of smoky/spicy red berry fruit, plummy and rich on the palate, with a lingering harmonious finish, a perfect partner for cheese and nuts. OR Fonseca Unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage 2005 The 2005 vintage was preceded by a series of intense heatwaves throughout the summer, followed by some welcomed rainfall which helped to round off the ripening of the crop. As a result, this vintage produced wonderfully intense and concentrated wines of black-red colour, dense plum and fig nose, full body and fruity finish, pure and direct. It is a golden coloured wine with a bouquet expressing classic honeyed botrytised aromas of citrus fruit, mango and quince underscored by spice and oak nuances. The complex, silky textured palate has tiers of luscious melon, stonefruit and clover honey supported by hints of nutmeg and smoky oak. Wonderfully concentrated it is balanced by a fresh citrus edge. Forrest Estate Marlborough Noble Riesling 2009 This 2009 sweet wine is gorgeous - adding to a long line of superb Forrest Marlborough Botrytised Rieslings. It's deliciously ripe, exudes lovely orange marmalade, apricot and toffee aromas with a sweet opulent palate, finely poised with a clean lingering finish. A world class sweet wine. Riverby Estate Marlborough Noble Riesling 2009 This wine is deep, rich lemon to pale gold in colour. It has spell binding aromatics featuring an array of intensely ripe stonefruit characters, predominantly exquisitely ripe apricot, peach and nectarine, on a classically orange zesty, citrus backdrop. On the palate it is luscious and mouth coating with an extraordinary richness and yet has an ethereal sensual quality. |
