Mid-Flight Snack Daikon Slaw Salad Deli Platter featuring five spiced duck, smoked salmon and goat cheese Pre-Arrival Light Meal Seasonal Fresh Fruit Shell Pasta in Red Pepper Pesto Sauce with shrimp, leeks and red peppers Or Glazed Beef Tenderloin with sesame sauce, vegetable medley and rice Cookies 'n' Cream Cheesecake 07/09 BE US-PVG-C10C (ATL/DTW-PVG) (with thanks to Carfield, I borrowed his format) Dining notes: Pre-take off sparkling wine was drinkable but not memorable. The Pacific Rim Dry Riesling paired excellently with the appetizers and the Bordeaux accompanied nicely the roast pork for the main meal -- giving way to the pork while simply providing background. The roast pork was slightly dry, but the appetizers were excellent, as was the five spiced duck on the mid-flight snack. The classic ice cream sundae, of course, loaded with nuts and chocolate sauce, I would not miss for the world. I popped some sleeping pills and overslept, thus missing the final meal, but all that sleeping on board, along with the 777-200LR flat beds, made it very easy to overcome the 12-hour time difference with surprisingly little jet lag. Overall Grade: B+. |

July 2009 Wine List Whites Pacific Rim Dry Riesling, California, 2007 Bonterra Sauvignon Blanc, Mendocino, California, 2006 Reds Wakefield Promised Land Shiraz Cabernet, Australia, 2005 Château Greysac Médoc Cru Bourgeois, France, 2002 Dessert Wines Plunkett's Blackwood Ridge Botrytis Semillion, Australia, NV Ferreira Doña Antonia Reserve Port, Portugal, NV Sparkling Wine Scharffenberger Brut Sparkling Wine, California, NV First Course Vegetable Spring Roll Carrot and Ginger Soup Fresh Seasonal Salad with oranges and candied nuts Main Course Delta Chef, Michelle Bernstein’s Selection Roasted Chicken Breast with balsamic cipollini onions and blue cheese sauce, served with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach Or Filet of Beef with port wine sauce, accompanied by potato wedges and asparagus Or Seared Cod Fillet with tomato and olive ragoût, accompanied by potato galettes and sautéed leeks Or Rigatoni Pasta tossed with stewed tomato sauce, olives and capers Or Stir-Fried Port in coconut curry sauce, served with cucumber and jasmine rice Dessert Seasonal Fresh Fruit Or Fine Cheeses selected to perfectly complement one another in flavor and texture, offered with fresh fruit All Natural Vanilla Ice Cream Sundae with your choice of sauces, whipped cream and chopped nuts, garnished with a pirouline cookie Mid-Flight Snack Seasonal Fresh Fruit Yogurt Breakfast Breads served with butter and preserves Pre-Arrival Light Meal Slaw Salad Beef Brisket in cream sauce, with a medley of vegetables and steamed rice Or Braised Seafood with olive sauce, served over orecchiette pasta with broccoli and carrots Coffee Mousse Cake 07/09 BE PVG-US C10A (PVG-ATL) (with thanks to Carfield, I borrowed his format) Dining notes: Pre-departure sparkling wine... ah nice to leave China in Business Elite. This time I tried the Bonterra Sauvignon Blanc but it was not as good as the Pacific Rim Dry Reisling, so I asked for a glass of the riesling. The appetizers were good - I love how you get all three on a tray. That there were five main courses was impressive. I had the Stir-Fried Pork in curry sauce which tasted rather Thai to me, with a light piquancy. Very nice. Cheeses were forgettable, but DL's trademark ice cream sundae was compulsory and I think I had a refill. The desserts and cheese were accompanied by the Botryitis Semillion, which provided a wonderfully sweet interplay, rich with botryitis, and the port (served very properly, in a port demi-glass). Also notable: DL provides a metal teapot, with which I brewed my own pre-sleep chamomile tea -- classy! The mid-flight snack must not have made much of an impression on me though I do remember having it and I think the yogurt was fresh and delicious. Despite my use of sleeping pills, I missed no meals this time. The braised seafood pasta was a well-composed and tasty denouement to a great flight with flat seats on the 777-200LR. To complete my tasting of the wine list, I had the shiraz (rich and deep but not particular outstanding example of the varietal). Overall grade: A+. |
