As it did for your trip report, which would otherwise have been highly entertaining.

777Brit, I had no idea! I'm also half-Asian, and if someone had tried to bully me out of my seat, they would have gotten what I like to refer to as the "Look of Death," and if that didn't work, I would have then gone "Crazy Buster" on him (that's Mr. Buster's term of affection for it).

And people say Americans are rude travelers!

It's a hard world, and the fit will survive whilst the meek will flounder.

The "victim" in question had already fled his assigned seat, one of 4 in the last row - travelling with his wife and two kids. I wasn't travelling with any family, so I just helped him to reunite with his loved ones. :-)

In chaos, lies opportunity.

It is people that think that Asians are quiet and docile that makes me extra loud and assertive in America / Australia.

That's supposed to make me curl up and die, right?

Presumably my racism extends to self-loathing, if I choose to do the same to someone of my own ethnic group?

"Racism" doesn't come into it. It could well have been an ubermensch that fell victim to what I did. Some people are just born victims - like the ones who cry "racist" all the time.

This speaks a lot about jongar's personality, as well as the original poster shillard. They have reached record lows in FT.

I cannot but agree with the vast majority of all the other posters in this thread.

Pig's arse!

Decided that the only appropriate action was to "improvise, adapt, and overcome", so I picked on some poor asian bloke who looked like he knew SFA English, waved my boarding pass under his nose and told him to piss off out of my seat. ;-)

Stuck him in 55F, and enjoyed a comfy aisle seat in the second last row from LAX-SYD, scoffing a fillet mingon that my seafood allergy had secured for me...

A really informative trip report. I thought the phrase "pig's arse" was funny, until I realised you were referring to yourself!

A shame you weren't told to sit down and shut up by the SFA English speaking Asian guy...

What with your abject bullying of people you consider to be beneath/weaker than you, and the earlier reference to spending AUD$600 on lounge membership, (...so I could get my seating preference on this trip), suggests you should take a long look within yourself and see where your insecurity and low self-esteem stems from...

Very informative report, but not necessarily for the travel info....

OK shillard, so not only did you "pick on some poor asian bloke," you did so in front of his wife and two children? Now that's class.

777Brit and Buster: Glad to know there are other half-Asian FTers out there!

Hi there..

I get the feeling that this is going off topic, but... ...

I agree that some people "seem" to be born victims, and that, to a point, allows you to justify your behaviour towards them. Indeed, their lack of self-assertion reinforces your belief that what you are doing is correct. Also, I agree that you weren't being racist. It just so happened that the person you bullied was Asian, and fitted your perception of weakness. That is, probably physically smaller, and more likely to feel intimidated.... ... also his probable difficulty in English would give you a superior feeling also... ...

However, how do you react when you cross the path of a person who you've mis-judged? Do you perservere with your original plan, or change it? And if so, how?

Unfortunately, the dynamics of travel sometimes instill a feeling of awe/fear in people, and when they are placed in this type of situation, tend to acquiesce because they don't know how to react.

This is also what happened to you. You were placed in a situation, (ie unwanted seat assignment with the fear of being uncomfortable for a length of time), which you couldn't deal with, so your inner child threw a tantrum and picked on somebody you perceived to be weaker, both physically and culturally... ...

You probably think my post is all nonsense, and will, no doubt, post to that effect. However, DEEP inside yourself, you are already considering the validity of this argument, and should think back to past instances of bullying and confrontation... ... perhaps the corporate b****rd will then grow up...

In the midst of all this, I think you're a very interesting person... ...

Small people, with small minds, who live in small worlds, get upset by small things.

Astonishing, really, that so much creative energy has been wasted (yes boys & girls, wasted) on trying to sink the boot into me for "bullying" some bloke than none of you know from Adam.

Rest assured that I really do love children and animals, and would do anything to protect them (unless they were standing someplace that had to be bombed in the national interest).

You really have to wonder about the motivation for all the grandstanding. Does anyone here REALLY think that my opinion, or future actions, are likely to be influenced?

Of course not.

Salveing your own consciences, no doubt.

As I said, it's a hard world. There are those who will succeed & get what they want, those who won't, and those who will die trying. I'll take A or C, you lot can have B.

No, I'm not examining the validity of your argument at some deep ID-like level, your Fraudian notions of "inner child" are way off base. You would do well to either hunt down Otto Rank's work on the notion of WILL, or (probably easier) learn German and find current editions of his work in the original language.

Psychobabble aside, I agree that travelling is a "competitive sport", and that those who choose to be victims will be victims.

Choose your target wisely.

This means that healthy adult males are fair game. I'll gladly stand for a two-hour train ride and surrender my seat to a lady or elderly/ infirm man (golly gosh, even Asians) but everyone else can join the bearpit. If they don't have the balls to tell people like me to go to hell (and I have to wonder how many of those claiming to do so, actually WOULD when confronted) then they get to wear it.

Do I re-evaluate people, and modify my behaviour toward them accordingly? Sure, after putting them to the test. If they pass, welcome to the fold. If they don't, then the peasants can step aside.

This is getting grossly off-topic. Anyone who feels compelled to save my soul can do so via email - [email protected]

Actually quite laughable.

I find Action Man*'s answers quite touching, in a pathetically misguided kind of way (and his sidekick jongar always provides the right tone anyway, so well done there).

Reminds me of a Bill Murray character, the laughs excepted.

The "real world" isn't just about survival of the fittest, it's also about living within a community (at large). Behaving like a tw*t is of course always an option, so well done to you. Youre all set to fight your way in the urban jungle, etc (add all suitable clichs). Do you have the same problems as Crocodile Dundee with elevators and microwaves? Civilisation is indeed a rather scary thing, so reverting to Cro-Magnon behaviours must be refreshing.

*as in the plastic hero, trademark recognised.
