I remember many back in the day like others mention. One time is most memorable and barely related to the landing. Flying Chicago - Tucson during March Madness. Arizona is a perennial tournament team. The landing was a little hard. After the pilot taxied off the runway he came on the intercom, apologized for the landing and said that is what you get for listening to the radio while landing a plane - figured he was joking. He did follow up with Arizona wins and the score. Then the applause happened . . .

Twice - once when landing at the old Hong Kong airport -- which deserves applause. The other time at LGA when the fight experienced a lot of turbulence. Our flight was so rocky, we bounced (literally) a couple of times on the runway, couple of storage cabins flew open and all the oxygen masks deployed. IMO, it was clap-worthy.

I have myself clapped for a few last flights (before retirement) - both pilots and cabin staff.
Generally, flights on which there are large student groups (especially during the summer leisure travel season) almost always have clapping upon touchdown.

When you think about it, an accident preventing the bus driver from successfully completing a route is far more likely than an accident in an aircraft, so the bus driver deserves the applause more than a pilot.

Happened all the time on my AA flights for a few months after 9/11
Once for a pilot's retirement on arrival into DFW. We got showered by firetrucks too leaving MIA.
Arrivals into MCO. Everyone excited to get to the "Happiest Place on Earth"
And more recently... There is this one ASA FA that asks everyone to applaud all the military on board. Not sure how I feel about this one. While I appreciate and honor their service; the prompted gesture kinda smacks of false patriotism.

Twice, after a FA last flight before retirement and also after the flight landed with a 5 hour delay sitting on the taxiway.
People in Poland and also China like to clap. In China the also stand and collect their baggage as soon as the plane lands.
