I heard more claps in East Europe then in the West. In the US most of the flights are full of business passengers or people that travel so often that they don't think about it twice.
In bad weather conditions people may clap to express their affirmation for the hard work the pilot has done landing the plane safely in rough conditions like wind or fog. But then if it's fog, it's probably Cat IIIb landing the plane, and not the pilot -

Every time I have flown in to Tegucigalpa Honduras I have experienced this and have heard it from many others. That landing is rather "hairy" under the best of conditions.
Also have seen it many times after rough flights.

This happens at least several times during the winter every year on flights to Florida.
Typically right after the Captain has announced the temperature in PBI or FLL .

Only seen it twice, both many years ago.
One on a flight CCS-MIA on a now defunct airline, VIASA and the second after a flyby on a BUR-OAK flight on UA
I've done other flybys, bounce landings and even once on a DL flight landing at PDX we watched as the pilot came from about 8 inches of digging the wingtip into the ground. Didn't even get golf clapping out of anyone.

I've experienced this relatively often, both here in the US and overseas. In the US, it usually seems to be after a rough landing or a long delay. One that stands out was a scary cross winds landing in PHX- one with huge drops all the way in- that had some people screaming. When we landed, everybody clapped, including me- just happy to be on the ground again.
This December, there was applause for no apparent reason when we landed in Cairo, and again when we landed in Luxor. Odd, but not bothersome to me. At least they are happy. Better than the leap-out-of-the-seat-to-get-off-first ritual I've seen so many other times.

Only saw clapping once
June 2004 Air France from CDG to DTW. The worst take-off I ever experienced. The aircraft started to veer to the left, then overcompensated and veered to the right, then back to the left at an even more exagerated degree. This went on for several veers until the aircraft finallly lifted off and was able to go straight in the air. When we landed, there was applause!! To make up for the wet seats on the take-off. After back home, I recounted this experience to a freind who was a pilot, and he said had we not lifted off, the plane would have kept veering out of control laterally until finally the wing hit the ground and we overturned and there would have been a big fire with no marshmallows. Um.
