High Winds UK causing diversions

My sister and husband were traveling back from Cyprus last night into MAN and pilot aborted landing in MAN as winds were so bad. Regained altitude and made a still scary (kettle definition of scary) landing in LGW. They all then got a bus transfer to MAN from LGW. My sister says, she has never been so frightened in her life.

Any more diverts due to the high winds in the last 24 -48 hours?

Just picked up my sister-in-law from LTN today. She said almost exactly the same thing - she's never been so frightened on a flight. Seems like the winds are at least a little bit calmer right now. Glad I'm not flying today...

I am scouring the FT forums right now to see if any TATLs got diverted/cancelled.

How large was the aircraft from Cyprus? TATL aircraft are more likely to be able to takeoff and land with strong crosswinds.

In fact, one spring Friday afternoon PMNW was cancelling flight after flight on the ORD-MSP route due to wind. Then, to save lots of business travelers from being stranded in Chicago for an additional night, they pulled an old spare 747 out of the hanger and flew it down to scoop everyone up and bring them home. After the rebooking, I ended up on the upper deck and got to enjoy the old-style circular staircase and chandelier from the 1970s.

My sister just left but she said it was "small" but she is a kettle so I need to interpolate this. I also assumed she flew Thomas Cook but in fact it was EasyJet. It was ex Paphos. Based on this information it sounds like a 737-800/900.

TATLs of course as you suggest are usually minimum 757. I arrived in MAN last Saturday on DL 64 which is a 767-300 (1 hour early > 100 mph tailwind). Returning this Saturday on VS109 which is a A330-300 .

The area I live in is in the Heathrow flight path, and I was out playing tennis today. The wind was *crazy*. (I remember one time in probably similar winds the plane I was on got within 30 feet or so of the runway at Gatwick, then pulled up and diverted to AMS). I'm not surprised it was scary for people.

A friend's AMS-MAN was seriously delayed by heavy winds yesterday and I think he said the landing was quite interesting too. His Lima-AMS flight had arrived very early.

I live on one of the LHR inbound flight paths and it has been very, very windy here. We've also had torrential rain.

Lucky you weren't on yesterday's.

Winds were bad, they even shut down the QE2 Bridge.

Arriving into the "wrong" airport at 2:13 am would not be fun. That flight did quite a sharp U-turn over MAN.

My sister and her husband believed it was a few feet off the ground in MAN (could be a slight exaggeration) Pilot then accelerated and climbed and landed in LGW -which also was not fun according to my sister. Then they had to get a bus all the way to MAN. Then they had to drive home to Preston in the NW.
