Saw a woman not long ago trying to go through security with two one-liter bottles that were frozen! She argued at length that TSA regulations only prohibited liquid items, and that ice as a solid was exempt. This went on for several minutes. She even tried arguing then that metal should be forbidden, since metal can also be liquified at high temperatures.

Needless to say the people in line behind her (including myself) were not amused.

What is not amusing is TSA (via Blogger Bob at their blog site and some "fine print" on their website) says frozen items are OK. This came up when Britney Spears was filmed going through a checkpoint at LAX with her Big Gulp.....

Oxygen is a liquid at very low temperature. Would O2 be banned base upon this argument?

Talking Dumbest PAX Comments Ever

I'm on a flight from BHM-CVG a couple of years ago, on DL, and we take off in one of this "cigarette" jets -- ya know, one seat on the left, two on the right. It was right after BHM expanded their runway ... which I remember because I was kinda ticked that we taxied all the way to the blessed end of the thing (which, as you'll see, was a blessing in disguise!).

As we're lifting off the ground, the pilot suddenly puts the nosegear down, hits the reverse thrust, and takes us back towards the gates. Nothing is said from the cockpit until we are well off the runway, and the pilot says that we returned to the gate because we had struck some birds.

Guy in front of me starts whining to anyone in earshot about his connection in CVG and won't shut up. Finally, they decide to get us another plane. As we're deplaning the old one, those of us with gate-checked bags are waiting ... I'm checking out the plane. There are obvious signs of birdstrike on the leading edge of the left wing, the engine cowling ... I actually picked up a feather and kept it as a "souvenir " of sorts.

Waiting in the terminal for the new plane, same guy starts slamming the airline, the pilots, the airport .... I finally have had enough and fire up my laptop. I've got a bunch of pictures on there that I use in safety presentations, and a couple of them are planes after birdstrikes -- serious damage. I show them to the guy ... and a couple of the "followers" he's picked up and said ... "hey guys, they can't see every part of the plane from the cockpit ... had the bird damaged the engine, we could have landed in the middle of downtown BHM! Here's what birds can do to a plane!"

Shut him up quick ....

BTW same pics got me into trouble on a UA flight one day going into LAX I think ... I was putting a PPT together for a presentation I was giving later that day, and was looking through the pics I had of various plane crashes, when the FA said she'd had a complaint from other PAX about my "offensive material". I stated, "there is no porn on this compute!" She said, "no, sir, the pictures you are viewing are making some of the PAX nervous".... ahh, to be jaded.... now I pull out the pics whenever I'm flying with "kettles" nearby.... just because....

^ Awesome. Add this to my list of things to do before each flight.

She may have not been stupid and was using that an excuse to try to get it past security. I am on insulin and have to have some form of fast acting sugar with me at all times. The thing that works best for me for treating a low blood sugar is Orange Juice, so when I travel I take a couple cans of OJ so I have them at my hotel and have some within easy reach on the plane in case the FA can't get up to get me a glass. I usually just grab a can or two out of the skyclub at DTW to avoid holding up the security line and will just rely on the glucose tablets returning. One time I was either flying WN or did a park and fly and had an early morning flight and had to declare two cans of OJ. I showed the TSA agent my insulin pen and he asked if a meter and I showed him that. He told me he get's bs'd a lot about people trying to sneak stuff through saying it's for medical reasons and that just a couple days earlier a lady told him a can of pop she was bringing through was in case she had a low blood sugar due to her diabetes and it was a can of DIET pepsi

Did they keep her there long enough for it to thaw? Problem solved if so.

I think the appropriate response is something along the lines of, "Perhaps if people minded their own business instead of snooping over my shoulder, they wouldn't be so worried."

Did the lady not think that TSA has common sense?

I think I would've said "Okay, if they don't like pics of wrecked planes, I'll go work on the section of the presentation with the pictures of the dead bodies pulled out of the wreckage".

Good thing I wasn't sat next to you, you'd have been too busy answering my questions to get any work done, and distracted by nervous pax fainting/puking

Yes, canned OJ for diabetics is allowed like baby forumla, etc. I like the six ounce cans but have trouble finding them now so use the minute maid juice boxes.

Just make sure it is taken out of your bag and put in a bin and when going through security, if I am able to talk to the screener viewing the items on the belt I will tell him I am declaring and am a Type I diabetic and if I can't I will ask one of the other TSA employees to inform the person doing the screening. I try to put my insulin pen and vial of Lantus next to the OJ in the bin.

Once in a while he will have a problem with a TSA agent that doesn't know the rules and he just has to tell them it's medically necessary and ask for his superior if he still gives him a problem. They usually swab the cans and I just put my shoes on and gather my other items while they do that.

It's too bad they own the southeast or I'd be with you. I fly US whenever I have the choice.
