What's a Kettle?

NEXUS. Some of the clerks haven't known what it was, and looked it up in a book. But 2 times at JFK T2 I had clerks who didn't know what it was, asked me if I had something else, I said why should I produce something else. Thanksgiving 2011 I had 4 clerks, including a supervisory clerk, none of whom knew what it was. I couldn't manage to get through without providing a driving license.
Another time (Memorial Day weekend 2012?), also at T2 I had a clerk who didn't know what it was, asked for a DL, I said this is a legitimate ID why should I have to show anything else. Finally was going to let me pass, but I asked him why he didn't know something it was his job to know. He then stopped me and called for a supervisor, told the supervisor I was giving him a hard time. The supervisor didn't know what it was, refused to look at my phone when I attempted to show him, refused to admit there was a higher supervisor when I asked to speak to one. I asked the document clerk his name he said Jeffrey and pulled out his photo badge for about 1/2 second. I, however, memorized the number off his plastic badge and the supervisor's plastic badge and included them in a complaint. The clerk answering me said he didn't know why they didn't know what it was and they would investigate. He also said TSA "officers" were in the frontlines or something, signing his email as "officer X". I answered him back, addressing him as "clerk X" and told him that the idea that TSA clerks were in the frontlines of anything was a large part of the problem. They should tell them they are there to do X job and to do it right.
I have no idea if my complaint had anything to do with it, but I didn't have problems with getting people to recognize the NEXUS card after that. Now I tend not to use it because I put it in a pocket of my backpack and put the backpack in my rollaboard but I am going to start making it a point to use it more. (Although I can't imagine they won't know what it is at the magic lane - but if they don't, that will be good to know).

So you purposely slow the line down and use valuable TSA resources that could be used for other passengers just to prove a point when you have other forms of ID handy?

So you purposely slow the line down and use valuable TSA resources that could be used for other passengers just to prove a point when you have other forms of ID handy?

I wanted the clerks to do their jobs. I wanted them to do their jobs right then, not complain and have more "training" to which they won't pay attention. I was attempting to train them right there, and they were too lazy to pay attention, just as they were too lazy to pay attention the first time.
But the most important reason I did X and not Y is that I chose to do X. You are free to choose to do Y.

I'm relatively new to FT, and have often wondered why non-elites milling about very near the gate are called "kettles". Figured it had something to do with the old adage of "The pot calling the kettle black", or something like that.
Was just listening to an NPR podcast on their Stuff You Should Know show and the topic was about Vultures.
Come to find out, a group of vultures in flight is called a "kettle".
Is that where the annoying-non-elites-who-are-all-blocking-the-gate-so-they-can-rush-to-coach term comes from?

Anybody who unnecessarily clogs the security queue is a Kettle.
And yes, purposing f***ing with them or attempting to deliver them "training"
would be highly Kettlish. No positive outcome can come from that - for you, for the TSA agent, or for the passengers in line behind you. But I suspect you are already aware of that, yet choose to act Kettlish anyway.

How about "expensive"?

I am leaving behind a wake of TSA employees that have indeed received some very public "education", or have learned just how little administrative authority they have. Often times other passengers will ask me about the acronyms I use, and we end up having a nice little chat.

Then there's the Behavior Detection VooDoo Practitioners wandering around, oh I have a special place in my heart for them. The only time that is wasted when I screw with them is mine, since theirs is a waste to start with. It's entertainment value for me, and keeps me out of crowded Clubs knocking back rotgut Gordon's.

I disagree. "Kettle" behavior is caused by ignorance. The purposeful delays discussed above are people sticking up for their rights. They're done with significant knowledge, not ignorance. Whether or not that's a good use of delayer's time, and how much it irritates other people in line, are separate topics for criticism. But it's not kettle-ish.

Are you saying the clerks are so dumb and lazy that they'll never review the list of IDs, even after you've left? That's true of some clerks, but not true of every clerk. And what of those who come after you? Some clerks at international terminals want to see passports, some think passports are not acceptable IDs on domestic flights. Any passenger who insists that the clerk accept an ID listed in the manual as an acceptable ID - who forces the clerk to act within the rules set out for him - does a service to others - to persons who don't want a clerk pawing through their passports, or to persons who wish, for one reason or another, to use their passports as their IDs.
I understand that some people live their lives following a philosophy of "whatever happens, don't make waves". That's not how I choose to live.

I always thought it would be a cool partnership for airlines to offer Kettle brand chips in coach. Or perhaps small bags of kettle corn.
