TripIt Consolidated Help and Information Thread

I sync TripIt calendar with my Google Calendar. The problem is that Google thinks the TripIt calendar is in GMT, while my actual timezone is Pacific (PST/PDT). This results in all TripIt events showing up 7 hours earlier than they should.

E.g., a flight leaving SFO at 11am shows up in Google at 4am.

I don't see any way to change the Google Calendar's specific timezone if it's an imported webcal such as TripIt, it's not an editable field.

I reported this to TripIt and they seem to be able to reproduce it, but then say it's a Google issue. They are probably right.

I reported it on Google Help Forum but no official response for several months.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I would think that these days TripIt and Google would be a common combination of tools, but I can't find anyone else discussing this problem anywhere. A fluke in my account? Am I mad?

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

What timezone is your Google calendar set to? My import from TripIt works just fine.

In Calendar Settings > General: GMT-8 (Pacific), as I want it.

In Calendar Settings > Calendars > My TripIt Cal: GMT and I cannot change it. This is the problem.

In Calendar Settings > Calendars > My regular/default Cal: GMT-8 (Pacific), as should be.

I gave up using google calendar because it doesn't understand that people move from tz to tz when they travel. Works great if you're a coder locked in an office.

Mine shows up in the correct time zone (Eastern) in Google. That is interesting.

In your TripIt account, go into Settings | Publishing Your Calendar Feed. Do you have the box checked for Automatically adjusting the time zone (second box on that page)?

Time zones and calendar apps are always a nightmare, lose-lose for developers and users.

Many who travel just want to use an online calendar like an old fashioned diary - Put a meeting at 1pm in the diary, if you intend to meet someone at one, irrespective of where you will be, as the diary come with you and it's 1pm where you are. Your flight leaves CDG at 5pm - you don't care it's really 4pm in MAN.

Some people want and need to enter stuff in local times and are happy to have the calendar shift with them - but it does take some getting used to. I guess it's a little like getting to use the 24hr clock all the time. Initially, it can be hard to equate 14:00 with 2pm, but with practice, it becomes easier.

I now try to enter all my diary stuff in local to the event time - as my phone shifts my diary when I move time zones.

Hourses for courses and not everyone will be happy.

TripIt Consolidated Help and Information Thread

Just tried Tripit and debating whether to use on an ongoing basis because of the following annoyances. Anyone know if there's a setting I can use to do the following?

1. If my hotel confirmation shows a 2pm checkin, but both my flight arrival and car rental pickup are after this, I'd like the car rental to appear before the hotel checkin.
2. Any way to turn off the car drop off and hotel checkout events from displaying (and thus messing up the order, as noted above)?
3. Any way to show the air arrival as a separate event, but not (as described above), the car drop and hotel checkout?

you can edit the checkin time by clicking on Options and then edit.

Yes -- I have an upcoming 10-day trip and ended up having to edit 20 items -- not worthwhile using TripIt if I must do this each time. So there's no setting either to turn off pick-up/drop times and/or car times? Quite surprising that Tripit doesn't automatically recognize that I likely will checkout, then dropoff, then board my aircraft in that order.

I used to have to manage my itinerary manually, entering all the dates, times, and places into my calendar by hand. TripIt takes care of 80% of that.

So while I do end up editing each entry to reflect the actual start/stop times and to enter other information I want to track, it's a lot less work than I had to do before.

Out of curiosity, what were you using before TripIt?

This is a minor annoyance of TripIt but one that I put up with for the sake of the other features/benefits it offers. If is really just reading the times from the reservations emails so if you specify the 5pm arrival time in the hotel reservation and the 3pm car pick-up (and if the confirmation email also includes that) then they should show up in the correct sequence.

Kayak Trips does an auto-detect thing where they try to figure it out but I've had just as many problems with that as I have with the TripIt setup. Plus Kayak doesn't have a dedicated app for Trips so using it on the road is rather annoying.

Thumbs down Major Tripit Bug! [Apr 2013, now resolved]

Just a warning. From reading twitter, and my own experiences today, it seems tripit has a MAJOR issue right now. It is telling me BOTH my flights are EXACTLY an hour late:

UA 7016 HPN to ORD is currently DELAYED, departing at 1:03pm EDT.
Arrival time at ORD is 2:27pm CDT.

Your connecting flight, UA 685 ORD to MCI, is currently DELAYED, departing terminal 1, gate B9 at 6:25pm CDT.
You have 3h, 58m to make your connection.

My flights are on time. Someone posted just this morning on twitter that they believed tripits notices, and they now must fly standby. I have alerted tripit, but their support is business hours only, so they wont be there for at least 4 more hours...Be careful, ESPECIALLY if your flight is EXACTLY one hour delayed.

Welcome to FT andrewconrad!

We just checked our UA flight tomorrow and Tripit tells us it's been canceled. It hasn't. Checking UA, we find that the same flight today is canceled though.

Could it be something to do with a slow response to Tripit from the UA website? I'm always willing to believe the worst about dot bomb.

Edited to add: a case-in-point on UA's technology
