The more I use my MB Air, the more I think that it was actually designed for the newer Penryn and upcoming Mobile Penryn Intel chips rather than the older (higher wattage) chips stuffed into the smaller form factor.
The heat buildup during movie playback has caused my computer to overheat more than a couple times. It shuts down one of the cores and causes the movie to playback very badly. It could also be that the GMA x3100 lacks any hardware decode for DIVX/XVID/h.264 video.
Even during normal browsing, design, HTML/CSS work, the fan comes on full blast and sometimes a core shuts down as well. 20 minutes of Youtube will almost always cause it to happen.
Reading the reviews of the new Macbook Pros with the Penryn chips, it looks like they run much cooler and the fans turn on much less often. I'm convinced that Apple went ahead with the Macbook Air even though there would be heat problems without the new processors.
I think there will be an update as early as June when Intel announces the Centrino 2 or Mobile Penryn / Montevina processors.

) and MBA Rev A owners will not be left with an orphan machine. What are the chances that the MBA in its current form, was designed for both the current chips and the newer ones - with the possibility of an upgraded CPU card for Gen 1 owners in the future?

Hopefully the motherboard will not change (probably will though

I think the last time was when they still used 68030's...
From what i've seen of the motherboard in the MBA, there is nothing that can be upgraded. The CPU is soldered and glued in place, so no user upgrading like in many other notebooks.

When has Apple EVER offered upgrades for their machines?

I will probably be listing mine on eBay as soon as the Rev 2 is announced. Other than my slowdown / overheat problem, I think it's a great computer.

I've quite often changed the CPU in my desktop AND laptop. On most Dell laptops it's just a couple of screws to get to the CPU, and around $200 spent at Newegg on the correct mobile Intel chip. But I agree that it's not something most people will do

True; but at least it's still possible.

I've waited 16 months for this baby, another couple of months with my old iBook is probably worth the wait for Rev 2.....thanks to all for the heads up. Didn't think an 'upgrade' would be that fast in coming but that's Apple.

I'd usually not wait on getting "the next" Mac. If there is one really good thing about Apple machines, it's that they hold their value VERY well. Even after 6 months you can usually get away with a minor loss when selling it.
