MacBook Air
I just ordered mine. A little upset about the lack of user-replaceable battery:
TSA: Sir, please remove the battery from your laptop. I can't. TSA: Sir, comply immediately or you'll be arrested. I can't. The battery doesn't come out. TSA: Sir, I am a federal employee. You must take the battery out. Either way, I'm pretty excited. Now carrying two laptops won't feel like carrying two laptops and with the solid-state drive and LED-backlit display, the battery should last a whole midcon worth of ripped... er... iTunes-purchased movies. |
You can always buy the extended warranty, perhaps Apple would replace the battery when it nears the end of it's life?
|
What will you do when the battery conks out after 6 months and Apple offers to sell you a new computer - and will you be able to get your data off the old computer if it's dead?
|
I wouldn't let the lack of an official method to replace the battery stop me from buying one of these if I had a need for it. Just like there are third-party kits that have arrived in the marketplace to replace iPod batteries, I'm sure that the aftermarket will fill this vacuum with battery kits if it is at all possible for the consumer to take apart a Macbook Air.
I have my doubts that the battery itself would be covered by AppleCare. Removable batteries aren't covered in other Mac notebooks. AppleCare might cover the labor in this instance. That'd be something to investigate before springing for AppleCare on one of these. |
I got AppleCare. Always do it for new products worth more than $2k. It specifically does not cover the battery.
I'm sure Apple will offer a battery replacement program. Just stupid that you'll end up having to pay for labor and a battery, unlike most other companies where you just buy it and swap it out yourself. Yes, even with the 1.8" spec drive, it will still use standard mini-PATA connections. If the computer were ever to well-and-truly die, you could still get the data off. |

Engadget reports that battery replacement will be $129 with free installation.

Apple really dropped the ball with the battery design. They are quick to address it though. It appears like replacement batteries will come with free installation. But changing battery in the middle of a long-haul flight is still out of question.
It will be interesting to see how the geniuses will perform data recovery on the Air. It does not have a firewire port so firewire target mode is out. |
I'd rather buy a Sony TZ or Toshiba R500. Seriously, the MacBook Air is a joke and just isn't worth the money (esp. the $3000 SSD model). If you're a Mac Fan and got the cash then go for it. Me, I'm happy with my macbook pro.

Are you serious about the battery? I'm on the road the whole day so missed the expo. How will you be able to hard reset your notebook? I had to do it with win machines all the time but only a couple of times with the mcb pro. What is up with apple and batteries? Iphones, ipods, and now macbooks. |

Even that setup where it "borrows" the optical drive of another computer (was looking for Apple's official details but didn't find it quickly) allows for booting from a CD/DVD from what I've read.
Battery should be covered under warranty for a year, even if AppleCare doesn't cover it for all three. That's the typical deal. With my last two laptops I've used just one battery all the time. I have had to replace it (actually, got it replaced under warranty, heh), but I don't use more than one battery at once. Unfortunately, I am not in the market for one of these because my MacBook Pro is only just over a year old. |

You have to take out the battery? I kept my battery in on my macbook pro lol.
I'm more worried about it being so freaking thin. I feel like I'm going to break it if I handled it wrong. Just snap, right down the middle. No thanks, I'll stick with my nice 1" thick macbook pro. |
