A few other upgrade questions:
I'm looking forward to your 901 review, Taiwaned. ^ 2.It is not worth it if your going to only use it for web browsing and other simple things.Installing other os's is fairly easy. It does not take that long to install xp if you are fairly computer proficient and familiar with installing xp. If you use a program called nlite you can reduce the size of xp and create a bootable version that can then be placed on a properly formatted flash drive. 3. If you are going to install a new os I would recommend that you keep it on the ssd and not on a sd card. I don't think the speed of an sd card is even close to ssd but I could be wrong. 4. I don't think that the display from the 900's will fit into the 700's case. If you check out eeuser they can answer any question that you have. It is a very helpful site for modifying the EEE. |
I purchased the eeepc 900/xp several weeks ago, and am very happy with the speed etc, however, my main use for it is emails when I travel. I recently upgraded to Internet Explorer 7 and when I did I lost the ability for the two finger scroll on the touch pad. Contacted Asus, but they did not have a fix for it, and merely suggested that I don't do any updates, especially to XP Service Pack 3 as it is too large for this small machine. Anyway, went into add/remove programs and deleted IE7 which converted it back to IE6 and scroll now works. Just a bit of useless info for those who might consider upgrading.

I wouldn't subject my trusty EEE to any Window$ bloatware, be it Xp or Vista. :)
FWIW, It positively screams with Debian GNU/Linux with fluxbox. I would never recomend the EEE as a primary laptop for work or to replace a home PC/Mac.but for basic travel stuff it is just fabulous. |

agree 100%-this little machine gets the job done at incredible speed with no ramp up time like you have with MS app's.

I've been informed that my darling Mom has purchased two EEEs, one for her and one for me.
She got the 901s with XP installed. I've been doing searches and sending her links regarding nLite and eeeUser so she can start working on it now. Mine is waiting until my next trip to pick up. By then, she might be a better system tech on that thing than I. Any other top-of-your-head suggestions? I'm still bouncing around and deciding what would be easiest for her to use and follow, since my brother won't have time for this any time soon and I won't be there until August. Had a EEE been available for me to touch and hold and play with a little prior to March, I might have purchased one instead of the floor model Sony Vaio I ended up with. Went with Mom in June to look at the EEE and she liked my response to it so much, she ordered two of them. (Yes, I'm spoiled.) While the Vaio is a machine I've drooled over for years and am extremely happy to have, the EEE will be my travel machine. Web-based emails, online banking, small documents and spreadsheet adjustments (usually handled in notepad or Word and Excel and transferred to the desktop after travel) and now in a smaller package that won't take up what is becoming very valuable carryon space. I expect the EEE to be exactly what I need for my international trips, the Vaio for the general travel, the desktop to remain on the desk and I don't want to have to purchase another system for at least three years. That's the plan. |
There are so many eee pc models now, mostly seemig to be the same product except larger form factors (701/900, 901/1000) and generally substandard spec screens.
I'd be interested in the availability of the 901 and 1000 from each eee shopper/user. I m still confused about the 1000 - is the 1001 and 1000 the same thing and essentially a larger 901 with HD option? |

Anyone using a Wind yet? I'm probably going to pick one up in London tomorrow if I can find a retailer with one in stock |

Sorry for the delay in my review of my eeepc 901 win xp.
Had a terrible time setting it up and it was not technically Asus fault. Since i currently live in Taiwan, the region being Chinese the only version available was the Chinese XP version. I wanted a LEGAL copyright ENGLISH XP version. This was a lot harder than I expected. All the retailers said no except one. This should have been a clue but I am stupid. They said they can change it at ASUS repair center. It will just take 24 hours. I received my wonderful ASUS. As I started to load my necessary software, got my "you may be a victim of piracy" message. Took one week to sort it self out. Bottom line, not available in English in Taiwan legally. I personally had to load an English XP. ASUS repair center said since I did purchase a legal Chinese copy, technically still not correct but at this point, my conscience is clean. After all the copyright problems out of the way. It is wonderful. Just finished a long conversation using the skype video and the picture and sound is great. The battery life is incredible. At full charge, 6.5 hours of usage without any problem. Took a few hours to get used to the keyboard. Can't type as fast as usual but it will get me by no problem. Wireless connectivity is no problem. Any McDonalds or Starbucks and it is fast. |
I just got the 4G with XP preinstalled from J&R yesterday and I'm in love with it. Zero problems so far.
I'm looking forward to finally having a nice small laptop for travel. ^ |

I did order the Wind, but given the constant delays from MSI I really don't have much faith in them. I can't wait till they upgrade it to the VIA Nano CPU (all other specs really perfect) it will be kickin then! The CPU is the only weakness, and it is in line with the Atom really, the Nano will make it bounds better. |
Hs anyone sighted the Wind yet? The 3-cell battery is still a drawback, IMO. Someone in Australia found it for AUD$570, so I'd expect it should be on the street below $499, accounting for our 10% GST and higher than US prices for IT... The eee pc 1001 is low $6xx on sale.
Anyone seen this atom 10" 'Wind' with XP and 80Gb HD yet? Both make the HP look a little overpriced, so I hope it is competitive when it get the atom CPU... Under $600 locally would be nice. :) |

I picked up a wind (rebadged as an Advent for the UK market). Very happy with it so far - fast response time and overall great form factor. Haven't really run out the battery yet to test life but works fine for at leastthe 2 hrs I had it on batt this week on a train. |
