I tried the eee pc 1000H w. XP yesterday and liked the keyboard (not to mention the 1024x600 screen) compared to the 701 I use.

I would be good to see proper comparison reviews of 10" eee, Wind and HP models.
Who has done a proper back-to-back comparison, here?

Acer Aspire One

I just bought one of these for $379 with Linux installed. It just seemed like the screen resolution, SSD drive and atom processor made it too good to pass up. Has anyone played with this machine? I bought it sight unseen, but the reviews seem positive.

I found it much nicer than the EEE, great laptop. Looking forward to the new Gigabyte with touchscreen, yay for cheaper laptops!

Thanks for the feedback. I'm looking into upgrading the hardware. There are some complete fanatics that more or less disassemble the entire machine to add new memory/SSD/etc (see http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1).

1000H EEEPC arrived at the office today for me. Looks nice, and I'm going to train it up over the next few weeks to replace my Dell D610 for my travels. Have some upgrades planned - maybe some day the SSD price will be better, so it's HD for the time being.

Got it from laptopsdirect.co.uk (no commercial interest in them). Delivery was two days exactly after order.

Just sold my 701 8GB, which frees $$$ for other tech toys (er, I meant productivity tools)

Loved the fast boot-up, but really only used this around the house to check email and surf the net. The keyboard was too annoying to use it extensively.
My Iphone 3G now fills the need for quick internet/email access around the house and and around town.

Just to add to my previous posting: 1000H

I've done a few changes to suit my working environment (XP Pro, 250GB HD, 2GB memory). In general, the battery life is fine, usability of the keyboard is great. The WiFi signal strength is a bit variable, especially in comparison to my Dell. Watching video files is very good, the screen seems much clearer than my 2yr old Dell.

All in all, it's a very reasonable replacement for my D610. Only downsides are lack of viewable space on screen (was 1280 x 1024 now 1024 x 600), and the lack of an integrated smart card reader.

I'm going to try it on it's own for a trip to Asia at the end of August.

I've got a 900 with Linux (I did get a 701 but changed my mind seconds after having bought) and it is great but I did have one question it gets quite warm when plugged into the power. It's not hot hot hot but warm enough to make me curious. Anyone else had this with theirs?

bigguyinpasadena Aug 1, 2008 5:17 pm

Mine gets warm-but not Toshiba gonna explode hot :D
I've left mine on for hours and no heat problems.A lot less warm than most laptops.

Jimmie76 Aug 2, 2008 9:00 am

Thanks - no mine isn't volcano hot either just warmer than I was expecting.

Jimmie76, I wonder if some process is running full-tilt in the background. That would cause the processor to use lots of power and therefore get hot.

I don't know how to determine that in Linus. On a Windows box, you can see which processes are using the CPU cycles by Ctrl-Alt-Del.

from the command line, either "top" (which shows the busiest processes interactively, as fullscreen text) or "ps -ax" which lists all processes, including processor time used etc, will work.

There are several windowing task managers; I believe with KDE control-escape brings one up, but that may be distribution-specific.
