But those wouldn't all be smart phones? Probably a lot of them under $400, not the N95 which is at least $750?

Really, it's not that expensive that you have to ponder for days. It's not like a car or house purchase.
You can open it, activate and try for 3 days. It will cost you 10% restocking fee. If you return before 3 days, then they also refund the activation fee. |

$60 to "try" a phone is pretty steep. All other operators have a 14 or 30 day trial period on all their phones, with no restocking fee.

Yes, but those other phones wont make your hair grow, allow you to drive safely while drunk and talking on the phone and all around make things pretty swell now will they? :)

How much do you guys spend on travel a year?
This is a high-income demographic here, isn't it? What is $60 or for that matter, $2000? That said, I went with an unlocked Nokia with a prepaid plan. :p |

Well I guess I'll post my experience with the iPhone. I first saw the iPhone at Macworld and was like I want that phone, however, I was also considering waiting for a 3G version to come out since Steve Job did hint at it during his keynote. However, that all changed on the day the iPhone went on sale. Just so happen that same day, my iPod decided to die and my PDA was getting really annoying and slow, at the same time, I was looking into ways to reduce the number of gadgets I travel with because it was getting kind of a hassle packing everything plus the chargers for it... so I decided to get the iPhone last minute, understanding that I am taking a huge risk with buying a first generation iPhone.
If your wondering how long I waited in line to get the iPhone on the first day... I didn't wait at all. I decided to go to the Apple Store to get the phone since I had a gift card there. On the way, I passed 3 AT&T stores and each of them had a really really long line and I was reconsidering getting it on the first day. Got to the Apple Store in the mall, there was no line and walked up to a sales rep and handed them my credit card and was in and out of the store in under 5 minutes with my new 8GB iPhone. For the past few days I was pushing my iPhone to the max to see what it can and can not do and was more than happy with my purchase. Here is the rundown. Activation: I have a mac at home and the night prior to launch, my computer automatically downloaded and updated iTunes to the most current version. That pretty much got me set up for activating the iPhone, it was as simple as plugging it in and activating it. Since I was with AT&T since they were called Pacific Bell Wireless in Northern California, I had no problem renewing the contract for another 2 years. Since I'm a current customer, I opt for the $20 add on to my current plan, which actually saved me $5 a month than my previous plan w/ data and SMS. It took about 5 minutes to get my phone fully activated. Sync: Syncing the iPhone was quick and easy too, basically if you know how to update your iPod, you are pretty much set. Overall Experience: It does everything the commercials say it'll do. The iPhone is really responsive and very little or no lag time at all. The video and music sounds great out of the built in speakers (compare to other phones I have in the past). The built in widgets are very useful and the whole phone is really easy to use in general. I was able to type much faster on my previous phones and by the 2nd day, I was able to type with both hands. There was much less typo for me on this phone than on my older phones. The whole phone and user interface are very very clean and easy to understand. The downside is the EDGE network is really slow, but WiFi makes it up for it. Its true that it wont run flash, also don't expect to IM people as it is not really user friendly. I did test out some of the websites that I visit alot when I travel such as jetBlue.com and Hilton.com and the sites both loaded within a reasonable time on the EDGE network so I'm not too concern with not having 3G. Now, EDGE network is not really ideal when trying to access the YouTube feature on the phone. The camera is rally good for still shots, and only still shots. The quality of the call and easy of making calls was very impressive. In the end, I think the phone is worth the $600. However, if you can wait, I would wait till a 3G phone comes out. I would give it 4 1/2 stars out of 5 (losing only 1/2 a star for not having 3G) Oh yeah, combination talk, internet use via wifi and edge, using it as a iPod and watching movies... I was able to get 12 to 12 1/2 hours of use out of each charge. |

I'm sure that those of us that are in the position to be able to miss $60 the easiest, are the ones that will refuse to do so just to play with a phone, especially since there are other options of using it without the restocking fee. I for one can miss $60 just fine, but there is no way in hell I'll fork it over to Apple just to take their newest toy for a spin. |
