Yup the iPhone is great. It forces consumers to lock into a single carrier for 2 years, without any sort of phone subsidy / discount, and the iPhone is locked to a single SIM card.
No the sort of business model I'd like to see imitated / repeated elsewhere. For that reason alone I am not buying the iPhone. |

Yes, taking you eyes off the road to look for ANY object on the floor can cause you to have an accident.
It seems it is not the cell phones causing these distractions, it is the mind's in ability to process multiple thoughts. Then I must say I find your previous post a little confusing:

If we both agree that looking away from the road and/or doing something that distracts your driving, why would you use a PDA or a phone while driving? |

Yes, taking my eyes off the road is a distraction. It is a calculated risk. If I am driving down a suburban or rural road with no other cars, the risk of injuring someone else is next to nothing. If I am at a stop light the risk is zero. I'm sorry I was not more specific, I do not look at my phone while doing 65 in heavy traffic on the highway. The point of this thread is not to criticize my personal choices about using a cell phone while driving. So for the 2nd time, lets stay on topic. :) I heard the screen on the iPhone is quite good, I was trying to get an indication of how easy it is to see in bright sunlight especially since you have to dial with the touchscreen. |
I'm quite content with my Palm Treo 750. I figure, let the mass population discover all the problems & bugs with the iPhone first so I don't have to deal with it myself. Then, I'll consider the 2nd or 3rd version. ;)

So if someone bought it in the apple store, is it unlocked?

And until it is activated you can't do a single thing with it. |

Battery could be an issue. This thing's power hungry! Might be better when I get out of "demo for every Joe on the street" mode. :D Good luck! |

I've read an article that said people while on the phone drive better than when they are not. Because they are aware of the distraction they keep a better eye on the traffic and what is going on around them.

500k+ Sold Over Opening Weekend

It isn't necessary to sign a two-year contract in order to activate one of these. They can be activated on prepaid as well, and cancelled anytime.
I think it's going to be an interesting couple of weeks now that the firmware is in the wild. It wasn't very long before they had OS X running on Dells; I suspect it won't be long before there is hacked firmware, unlocking tools, activation tools, and third-party apps to address the numerous shortcomings. |
