Well, I think that's really a call that only Jobs can make/decide for the iPhone. If he said existing chips doesn't meet his criteria for the iPhone, then so be it. Since we don't know what his exact requirements are, we can't really dispute his claim.

We can't dispute it, but we can question it.

Both HTC and Samsung make very small 3G devices which have acceptable battery life. I could understand his claim about wanting more battery life than is currently available, but his excuse about a shortage is one I just don't understand.

Actually, the polls of customer service would disagree with that. Verizon and TMobile typically fight it out for the top slot, while ATT/Cingular drags at the bottom.

Weird, we also have terrible luck with Verizon at work. Problem after problem when making changes, etc. We're actually likely going to switch to ATT. Perhaps out of the frying pan into the fire, but hey. The only reason we kept going with Verizon is because of network, but ATT can also reach our basement location in DC, it seems, which is the most troublesome. Everywhere else besides that is pretty easy.

Are these 3G phones less than 1/2 inch thick while getting similar battery life?

I have a Nokia E61i, which is suppose to support WCDMA 2100. I'm currently in Berlin and even though I set the Network to UMTS or Dual Mode (auto switch between GSM or UMTS), it keeps reverting to GSM.

I could go to a phone shop where they have a 3G wireless card demoed on a Windows laptop.

But my phone can't use the 3G network.

Phone is shaped like a wedge and has a high capacity battery but sometimes, I have to charge it after a day or two of minimal activity.

Might be your SIM card. I needed a new Orange card in my TyTN to use 3G on some networks. On others my TMo US card worked fine though.

I just want to thank all who have bought the iPhone.

Reuters says unofficial numbers - 700,000 sold over the weekend, most Apple stores are now out of stock, rumors of deals with european carriers for late year roll-out, asia maybe early 2008 (china?), even jim cramer is touting the stock.

Since early Jan of this year, stock has appreciated >50%, and I haven't even jumped on the bandwagon - personally will wait for v.2 to come out. :D

Oh by the way, screw Verizon....they're arrogant, probably the worst customer service of any carrier stateside.

I bought AAPL stock at $83 a few months back, so thanks to the iPhone buyers. I'm not one.

You don't say whether you're roaming or not. If you are, you may not be able to roam onto 3G networks. And if your phone is constantly 'hunting' for networks, it'll hurt battery life.

You can't always see what the phone is up to. ;)

I seem to be getting three days moderately heavy (5-6 hours AAC playback, 1-2 hours web-browsing, constant GPRS attachment, odd short phone calls and 10-20 text messages a day) use out of my E61i. Unexpected, and very satisfying. ^

Likewise. I bought at 85, sold at 120. Bought back in
when the reviews were positive at 121.

it'll continue to go up, then split, and repeat. now wouldn't you have loved it even more if you had gotten in when AAPL was in the 'teens a couple of years back.

I purchased some of my ESPP shares at $6 (split-adjusted). I received some options with a price of $18 and $21 respectively. :)

I'm not roaming. It's the E-Plus network which is suppose to have 3G throughout Berlin.

Anyways, I wanted an unlocked phone for this trip so iPhone was not an option.

The Nokia is fine for Wifi surfing. However, it's very painful to scroll around web pages in a 320x240 screen with a D-pad. iPhone commercials do make scrolling around and zooming in and out seem transparent.

I bought in years years years ago when it was like 18-20, saw it tank for couple of years and now of course watching my 'paper' profits grow :)

I had to sell my little play portfolio of AAPL (5 shares! :D Bought with fantasy football winnings! :D) at around $100 a while back, but I bought in at about $45 so not bad for a tiny bit of money, I think it was less than 2 years to do that.

BTW, last night Apple's availability checker showed iPhone back to available today at many Apple stores, as many as half of the chain or more. The folks who bought two and are trying to flip one or both on eBay sure aren't going to make much if this keeps up. Looks like this weekend could ring up more solid sales as more people decide "Hey, yeah, I really do want one of those."

My mom, who "day trades for a living", made over 40 grand just in the last week. She also had some RIMM when it went up $50+ over the weekend. I'm so jealous.

I've only got a couple of hundred shares in my IRA....thus the paper profit.

Tell mum to buy you a iPhone, a new MacBook Pro and some cookies :p
