My iPhone review
So I have now spent roughly one week giving my iPhone the "Full Monty", and I submitted some feedback to Apple via their support page (Note that this was submitted as a "Enhancement Request"). Here's what it looks like, and hopefully gives some idea of what I like and dislike about the phone. Overall I am very happy with it, and I am looking forward to watching some movies while flying over the Atlantic tomorrow night.
Craig I am writing this after having spent a full week with my beautiful 8GB iPhone. I have been a loyal Apple user since I first began using Apple IIe's in elementary school. The iPhone is another great device in a long line of revolutionary computing creations. That said, I thought I would give my "2 cents" about a few things that I (along with many others I am sure) would love to see changed in future software/hardware updates or revisions. For starters, my previous phone for the past two years has been a Palm Treo 650...that gives you an idea where I am coming from. Here are my suggestions for the various functions: Email: Really need the ability to create new mail folders within the different email accounts. I use POP vs. IMAP and really am missing this feature which my Treo had. There also doesn't appear to be a way to save photos which come in via email and that would be nice. Wide-screen keyboard option would be lovely here as well. Phone: It would be nice to have a one-touch dialing feature. Also, as many others have probably noted, the call volume needs to be considerably louder. Under "Recents" there should be more categorization than just "All" or "Missed". What about about differentiating between "Dialed", "Received", and "Missed"? SMS: First, a "quick-note" or template feature is badly needed along with graphic smileys. Secondly, MMS functionality needs to be added. Last, but not least, please let us use the wide-screen keyboard option when typing text messages!!! iPod: Perfect!!! :) iCal: Support for the color coding of different calendars was a BIG motivator for me buying this phone. I was sorely disappointed to see that it doesn't exist. :( Safari: Two issues here..."copy and paste" and opening links in new windows. We need both! Ringtones: I am sure there are various laws, copyright issues and underlying corporate intentions involved here, but why in the heck cannot we not use a song from the iPod as a ringtone?!?!?!?!? Also, it would be nice to have customizable sounds for the different alerts (ie new SMS, new voicemail, etc).I think support for third-party ringtones in general would be a HUGE addition. Camera: Works well and takes nice pics for a phone, but the light sensitivity is a little off at times. Video capture would be nice as well. General: I think the biggest thing I would ask for here would be the ability to customize the "home" screen of the iPhone. As a musician who doesn't play the stock market, I pressed the "Stocks" button once to see what it does, and will probably never use it again. It would be neat to be able to replace that with another app. or a shortcut to another feature or setting. It could be the iPhone is only a GPRS Class C device - but probably more likely is that the AT&T network is a NOM 3 network. In other words, it doesn't matter what phone you have - when you're attached to GPRS, the network won't be able to route calls to the phone.
Edit: Having said that, some people over on Howard's are saying Apple told them this is a design decision by Apple - the network will route the call but the iPhone will silently refuse it. Pretty surprising if so, though it neatly avoids some nasty audio routing race conditions ;) |

The discussion of such and such phone could do all this 5 years ago is the same old stuff. Maybe so, although I doubt they were as small or as easy to use. The iPhone is clearly not about WHAT it does (many other devices do more things) it's about HOW it does it (most if not all other devices are more cumbersome at doing most of the things the iPhone does). |

Meaning either drop the data connection or drop the voice ability during data. Would have been nice if Apple gives a choice. For UMTS/3G networks by default they can do both at the same time. e.g. my Nokia E61i when using T-Mobile in the US will suspend the data connection when a voice call comes in. In Germany on a UMTS network it will continue the data connection during a voice call. |

You are comparing 2 non-smartphones (2 SE models) to a smartphone with a large hi-res display. I've scanned barcodes off my screen several times (and can even use the camera in my phone to SCAN the barcodes themselves). If you had owned anything with a decent screen resolution then yes, you would have been able to do what the iPhone can do ages ago. Now I will say this; what you did is probably EASIER on the iPhone, that is one thing that is revolutionary. The rest is just what any modern smartphone can do. That said; couldn't you have just swiped your CC at Sears? You don't HAVE to scan the barcode ;) Last time I did a merchandise pickup I also didn't have the pickup slip with me, so I just swiped my card and the merchandise arrived within 2 minutes. And I didn't even need an iPhone. |

Maybe now I can justify one for work. :D Of course a big part of Zimbra's appeal is the AJAX-based web client, so a lot of the groundwork is already in place, but they hacked out an iPhone-specific version in 2 weeks! Since it's through the Safari web interface on the phone, everything you create would go right onto the server anyway, so there is really no sync at all, it's just access, just the way you would reach it from any other browser. But instead of a lot of scrolling and such it's tailored for the iPhone screen. |

I spent the last week using my brother's iPhone while he's been in Costa Rica on vacation. I'm pretty impressed by the way in which you interact with the phone (the interface from both a hardware and software perspective) but IMO the capabilities of the phone are not up to snuff w/respect to its other qualities. The lack of 3G is unconscionable in a phone that costs $600, etc. I think the iPhone speaks very well of what the future will bring...but IMO there are better (from a practical perspective) phones available now. |
iPhone
Has anyone had any problems with Outlook 2007 and I-tunes? After I downloaded I-tunes and activated my phone I started having problems with Outlook crashing every 10 minutes. Had to re-install office and now I hesitate to reload the I-tunes software for fear of spending another hour or 2
working on this stuff. |

There are loads of other security concerns that I won't waste bandwidth detailing here. However, I found it extremely curious that even for a consumer device, they didn't include an app that allows you to wipe memory and lock the device remotely. Treos and Blackberries both have this functionality either native or third party. It's just too damned easy to have an app to do this to leave it out. As for remote wipe, this can be done with any device running exchange activesync 2003 sp2 or higher, from the exchange side. Granted, the device has to be pingable, so in theory someone would be able to shutoff transmission of the device and then could remove data. But, that is true of any device that isn't using a LOCAL password access, with lockout being a device wipe. Which, as you point out has been either native or via third party on many WM devices for years and years. But, I think that few people are enabling that security structure on the device level. |
