After reading Mossbergs review, I'm concerned with some shortcomings he's pointing out though many can be corrected with a software update. I would like a period and comma on my virtual keyboard.

Keyboard: The virtual keys are large and get larger as you touch them. Software tries to guess what you're typing, and fix errors. Overall, it works. But the error-correction system didn't seem as clever as the one on the BlackBerry, and you have to switch to a different keyboard view to insert a period or comma, which is annoying.
There's also no way to cut, copy, or paste text.
And the lack of dedicated hardware buttons for functions like phone, email and contacts means extra taps are needed to start using features. Also, if you are playing music while doing something else, the lack of hardware playback buttons forces you to return to the iPod program to stop the music or change a song.

Missing features: The iPhone is missing some features common on some competitors. There's no instant messaging, only standard text messaging. While its two megapixel camera took excellent pictures in our tests, it can't record video. Its otherwise excellent Web browser can't fully utilize some Web sites, because it doesn't yet support Adobe's Flash technology. Although the phone contains a complete iPod, you can't use your songs as ringtones. There aren't any games, nor is there any way to directly access Apple's iTunes Music Store.
despite its network limitations, the iPhone is a whole new experience and a pleasure to use.

Interesting Mossberg says no SIM card? Or does he just mean it'll be locked? Also, no search for contacts, which seemed to be the case from the videos as well. If they're stored consistently and sorted by first or last name, I don't find this a problem, but others might.
Also multiple reviewers have stated that it won't upgrade to 3G, but I wonder if they know that for sure? There was some speculation a while back that there was a 3G-capable chip in there, although it would be cryptic even for Apple to bring this out without enabling it.

the most glaring points on the iphone i see are:
1. cost... for those who will put out $500-$600 for a phone, it's a moot point.
2. network... att's EDGE plan isn't fast enough to support continual web browsing but for most cell phones with web browsers built in, it'll suffice until a true 3G network is rolled out
3. keyboard... will point and peck work?
and lastly the issue regarding business usage.. with the camera built in, it'll take away from a majority of corporate clients but those without the camera phone policies "might" embrace it. MSFT is expected to release the licensed version of activesync with the iphone on Friday so we'll see. Maybe it'll push the email to your iphone and it'll solve that dilemma...
Like the idea of picking up the phone from the store and activating it online without going to an ATT store and dealing with that. Gotta wonder how quickly the ATT activation servers will crash though with all the new activations though...

Also, there are times when screaming into a phone won't do but a discreet SMS will do. Like when you're trying to meet your friends inside a crowded bar and you don't know where they are. A text can convey that info far easier than screaming into a phone OR leaving to call then coming back in. Or when you need to be rescued from a bad pickup/hookup; you can SMS your wingman to call you for extraction.
Sometimes it's to relay info that doesn't really need a conversation. "upgraded to 1st, yeay!". SMS is also a good way to stay in touch with friends overseas as it's much cheaper than calling from your mobile.
Geesh, I sound like a salesperson...

WAH LAU! If this is true (iPhone being unlocked), then that removes a BIG obstacle for me to consider heeding the siren's call of the iPhone!

Unlocked? Heh. You can't even plug your existing AT&T/Cingular SIM card in there; the iPhone must be activated first. Not sure about after that; perhaps the upgrade with same phone number process involves switching the SIM after initial activation, but probably not. The info does reference "pre-installed SIM card", though, so it does apparently have the typical removable SIM. If you go to the iPhone site and zoom in on the top using the 360 view, it looks like there's a cover for such a slot there.
The thing about not activating it on corp accounts is odd. I understand the "no corp discounts", but why can't it be put on an account? Maybe later. AT&T stores, apparently (and presumably Apple stores as well), will have a one-phone limit at least for Friday.
