What part of what you said makes it necessary to sign a two-year contract?

Put in a made-up SSN when you activate and it will immediately give you the option to choose a pre-paid plan.

ATT is smart. Their systems actually try to find you using name and DOB first, and then match it to the SSN. So, even if you put in 000 00 0000 it'll check your own credit.

It is pathetic that those with crappy credit are eligible for a better plan with no contract, while those of us with good credit are locked in for 2 years.

Pfff.. That'll never happen. Reports don't just happen on an SSN unless the information matches (name/dob/ssn).

You can always pay the $175 to get out of the 2 yr contract. To me it's not a big deal. Just stay home instead of go out to the bars one weekend.

I hope someone cracks it soon, so I can stay with TMO.

Yeah, I upgraded it to WM6 ages ago, very smooth, but not for amateur upgraders

As for the Toshiba, it is the 800x480 display that interests me most.

The $175 would be fine if it meant you'd get an unlocked phone out of it, but if you cancel and pay AT&T, you STILL can't do anything with the phone...

Heck, why not just steal a SSN and name / DOB and go about it that way? A lot easier and foolproof.

If you really thought a multi-billion dollar company like ATT could be easily fooled with a simple SSN scheme I've got some swamp land to sell you in Florida.

I'm not 100% sure what it'll do once the sim is canceled, it wouldn't surprise me if it locks itself up again leaving you with a $764 paperweight with bad battery life.

Why in the world are you giving AT&T your DOB? I only give that out to vendors with an absolute need-to-know, e.g. on a mortgage application. I provide a fake DOB (off by a few days) to those vendors with no need-to-know who insist on it. DOB is one of the elements that can be used to steal an identity. If I'm ever in an identity theft situation, the odds are high that someone will be using my fake DOB and I can easily prove it's not me -- I have my birth certificate.
