Primarily my calendar and contacts, though occasionally a Microsoft Office document sent via Documents to Go.
I tried to sign up for the 60-day trial of MobileMe but gave up after the system booted me out after the sixth or seventh unsuccessful try to register. I read somewhere MobileMe has largely been a flop? I haven't looked at the Google stuff yet but may give it a try. I'd rather not keep a load of stuff in the "cloud" so it would be so much simpler if there was just a way to directly sync the iPhone/iPod with the iPad via Bluetooth or Wi-fi. It seems there should be an app for that.
Don't you sync calendar and tasks wirelessly? I'm a bit confused.

yeah, been using .mac or mobileme for about 6+ years now. Works great for me at least, I don't rely on it for email, but for calendar, contacts syncing, online storage, website hosting, photo gallery storage, etc. I only pay about 25-30$ a year, since I but codes on ebay. They are also avaialble from amazon for about 40$. If one has an iphone, ipad or macs it really makes it worthwhile. The ipad galley app is AWESOME!

I just sync with our Exchange server. But you could also do Google or as you point out MobileMe.

Sorry to confuse you, though frankly your tone seems rather patronizing. Please explain how one "wirelessly"syncs an iPad to an iPhone. I believe I'm not the only one who would like to know. TIA.

One doesn't sync an iPhone to an iPad wirelessly or not. What confuses me is the syncing of contacts and calendar on an iPhone to any physical device. I occasionally back up my iPhone and sync music, etc to a notebook but at few and far between intervals. Calendar and contacts no, that is all over the web so I don't do it to a notebook or iPad. I hadn't even thought of doing that. I thought everyone used Google except a few like me who used Exchange.

No, there are still some of us out there that do things differently
!!
I sync my iphone with my Windows Vista desktop regularly, and the M$ Outlook calendar and contacts are sync'ed automatically every time the phone is plugged into the computer (which charges the phone too). It is the machine I use when I am back in the office and I keep both in sync as much as possible.
I have not worked out how to wirelessly sync anything with the iphone, I use the USB cable. I have seen that MobileMe is supposed to do this over the web when I am on the road, but have not bothered with doing that just yet!

Is the Outlook syncing to anything or is it standalone? Can you get mail on the phone?

The Outlook runs on my desktop. I have always been able to sync the calendar/contacts etc with the iphone USB cable. I have never attempted to get them sync'd over the internet or the wireless.
I have the iphone (now 4, was 3, and before that HTC Touch Pro) sync the mail by IMAP, so that when a mail arrives in to the address it shows as unread on both the phone and the desktop. When I read it on either, it then shows as read on the other. Each phone has done it perfectly and simply. All mailboxes are shown on the Outlook and iphone - work and private. It is very seamless and works fine for me.
I also use LogMeIn Ignition on the iphone so that I can take control of the desktop when I want to. This allows me to run Flash on the desktop and watch it on the iphone!! it also allows me to do those things which you just cannot do with the iphone or that require a lot of processing power. It also lets me leave the sensitive stuff off the phone and access it remotely when I need it.

Is the Outlook using some kind of server? Where does the phone get the mail from?

My phone and desktop access the mail from a server using the IMAP protocol. I am not too geeky about this! It means I can pick up my mail from wherever I am in the world using the internet, and works well for me. I can get it via wi-fi in hotels etc to the phone.

Got it. Are you calendar and contacts on the same server? It so you can possibly also get them on your phone without having to sync directly with the desktop.

The Calendar and contacts are set with Outlook on the desktop. The mail is the thing that is on the external server and is picked up from the IMAP link.
I dont want my contacts and calendar stored externally, I have a few security issues with that. The mail is always unclassified, and I always treat it as if it is a postcard in the snailmail, unless it is encrypted and attached to a mail.

I see. I have my calendar managed by my assistant and I travel a bit. So being able to update it in real time remotely is important. Different use profiles. I understand now.

Why I Haven't Bought an iPad
There are three factors which have caused me to thus far miss the iPad revolution... all three are things which I consider "major dealbreakers". They are:
1.) No USB
2.) No Flash capability
3.) No multi-tasking!
So why have so many settled for so little?

integration and access
I know, I could upload to picassa or flickr and with certain devices people who see the pictures easily, download, etc., but nothing really integrates it ALL like apple and their ios platform. For the GP's it makes it SOO easy, I even their computers setup to just download from the SD card, upload to their MM space and boom everyone sees the new pictures. (it actually does it even more automatically if they use the Eye-fi card)
