Since the opening day of availability, the iPad has been my only "computer" for dozens and dozens of trips and without fail it has fulfilled each and every task I have needed it for. I don't do spreadsheets when traveling and presentation work just fine and since i have the iPhone for some time now, I've gotten very good about using virtual keyboards and really don't suffer that much without a "real" one.
Only one challenge popped up. In my last hotel stay, they did not have wi-fi in the rooms, only a small place in the lobby and that really just is not the environment i like when trying to max my online time.
The iPad does not have a direct way to plug in ethernet which was in the rooms. The workaround as I know is to carry along a cheap router, perhaps an older and smaller Airport Express to plug the ethernet cable in to in the room and thus all set for you own wi-fi, that or the new tethering from AT&T with my iPhone, but then we're have to change this topic to one of slim to none bars of connectivity. But the tethering option isn't my choice since it cost an extra $20 a month and you have to leave the unlimited data plan.
Anyway, that has been my only caveat, the ethernet cable challenge. But something certainly worthy of considering.

I use both a MacBook Pro 17" and an iPad. The 17"-er is more like a desktop that I can pack up and take with me at any time, so depending on how long i'm going for I have to make a decision as to whether I'm taking the laptop along or just the iPad. If I'm out for a few months, weeks, or even a week for that matter... I'll grab the big bag. If it's just two nights somewhere and back again I don't bother and just take the iPad along.
Moving to an iPad completely is a bit extreme as it's not a mini-laptop but rather a larger iPhone in terms of the OS (just that you can't call from it). Now if Apple was to install their normal computer OS on the iPad then that would be a different story, but for now that doesn't seem to be on the cards...

this thread caught my attention
I have been thinking about getting a Ipad ,but have not so far. Unlike others I would mostly be playing with it movies and web surfing. I was concerned about limited storage on the device most of my movies are about 4GB in size (vob file types), and I carry these on a portable drive (500GB). Since the Ipad can not power the drive through the USB cable this could be a issue. But now seeing the post and the picture of the case with keyboard I am thinking about expanding my use.
So I have the following questions:
1) can I install Star office on the Ipad for MS office like functionality?
2) And I would need a email client like thunder-bird (I would prefer it not be thunder bird), that works with exchange and syncs with my Droid.

The native email client on the iPad supports exchange and is quite good. It will get even better when iOS 4.2 for the iPad is released in November. If you are on an exchange account everything will be synced back to the server and then to your Android handset as well.

Right. The only limitation of the email on the iPad is that it can't do much unless it is online. The Apple office products work pretty well overall but not quite as complete as Microsoft office.

Neither of these is 100 percent Microsoft-compatible, either in user interface or feature list, but OpenOffice isn't either.

AFAIK, the current OpenOffice (includes StarOffice) support Windows (2000 and later), Mac (10.4 and later), Linux and Solaris (SPARC and x86). There are iPad solutions to what you need, though. QuickOffice Connect can create and edit Word and Excel files, and view but not change PowerPoint files. If you're just concerned with Word, Apple's Pages will also do the job.

Im off to PVG for four days on Sunday and Im really thinking of taking just the iPad and BT keyboard.
As of now, since I am getting the PPT/Keynote under control, I have the following iPad challenges in terms of things I use my Mac Air for:
1) I use a Livescribe pen a lot. I can write text and hook to my computer and mail a PDF of it to my assistant for typing. That is a complete no go on the iPad. Possible substitute, writing directly on the iPad with either Noteshelf or Note Taker HD. Or just wait till I return to dock the pen. Given how short this trip is, and the things going on that I might have to deal with it should work without the MacBook air - either substitute with an on iPad app or wait to dock. Any suggestions for good programs to write with and then send as PDFs?
2) Offline email, but I can do that on my BB.
3) Manuscript editing. Working on one now but I can send it without Endnote and have people back at home add the Endnote library I suppose. Im willing to give that a try.
4) Dragon Naturally speaking. Again, no way on the iPad compared to the MacBook (using VMWare) but that is something that I can either do without or use a tape recorder and wait until I return or try the DNS application on the iPad.
Any suggestions for writing with a stylus appreciated, but I think I talked myself into trying to go with just the iPad and BT keyboard. Saves 4 pounds at least to lose the MacBook air and power cable.

For those looking to move to the iPad but maintain some connection to a PC, Splashtop is a great cheap alternative to LogMeIn Ignition... $0.99 vs. $29.99, and the server app is free as well. This, along with ZumoCast (free) has made accessing a large non-apple media library extremely easy, either via streaming or file transfer, both of which take care of all transcoding automatically.

If you're going to be typing a lot and need more of a laptop than an extra-large-iPhone (with Skype only) then the new Macbook Air (now available in 11" and 13") might be a better option.

I do a lot of training and the big drawback (other than ethernet) is that while using the ipad for presentations, there is no way to charge it. For a long day, the battery life can be risky, and since I don't usually leave the ipad in the room over lunch, I haven't been able to charge over the lunch hour.
I wish there was a way to charge while using the VGA adapter.
