Is anyone aware of an Android World Clock application which shows the current time in various timezone WITHOUT referencing the timezone setting of the phone?

On Palm OS Treo I used Worldmate which displayed current time in five cities and synced with an internet time server. It ignored the Treo's timezone setting. I downloaded the Android version of Worldmate, but the multiple clocks feature appears to be gone. I have also looked at several other applications but they all base their calculations off of the system timezone setting.

I also came across TuneIn Radio, for free. Plenty of options to find the Bob & Tom show in the morning. Works much better than IHeart, but still has some stability issues. I get the occasional force close warning, but it will still keep playing. It dropped out twice this morning on my 40 minute drive for about 30 seconds each time, but I blame that more on the T-Mobile network.

ICS Bot is becoming a favorite of mine lately. Handy for opening calendar invites from Mac people. It really should be supported in the OS itself, but for now this is quick and easy.

Oh man, I never thought about searching for them on there. Thanks for the tip.

I persuaded the author of TM World Clock to add a feature which he will call "Global Offset" that allows the user to adjust all the clocks simultaneously to compensate for any difference between the system timezone and the local time. For example, my phone is set for Eastern USA time. If I were to go to Seattle I would set my system time back three hours and set Global Offset +180 minutes.

New Facebook App

There's a new Facebook app for Android. It's a marked improvement that brings the app to parity with the iPhone Facebook app.

The skymap, mentioned on an earlier post, is very cool. Just hold the device toward the sky and you can view the planets, stars, and constellations. Almost miraculous.

Even better when you hold the phone towards a person and say, "I found Uranus!"

I'm too grown up, apparently, to have thought of that myself...but the kid in me can't wait to do it to someone.

Quick(and maybe dumb)question. Will these apps work if your phone is in WiFi mode? I am looking at ether the G2 or the Mytouch4(Tmo)for use in travel outside of US and using them as travel guides. Also does the Turn by turn navi on these phones work without having either phone or wifi function on?
Thanks.

Apps that need data connectivity should work on both the cell data network and wifi. Wifi is usually offers much better performance for things like streaming music, video, etc. Really it depends on the quality of the 3G vs. Wifi signal.

The built in turn by turn navigation (Google Maps) needs a data connection to function properly. The maps are continually downloaded while you move, so if you can't get data you can't get much more than a longitude and latitude. It helps to get an initial lock to be connected to the cell network too - the GPS uses the tower location to get a rough idea of where it is to lock onto satellites faster.

There are some apps that will put maps on your SD card, but they are not free and tend to run close to the price of a standalone GPS I think. There are a couple free options to download and cache maps, but they are rather lacking from what little I have played with them.

For heavy GPS use I think a stand alone unit is still better. Navigation is also a huge battery drain since you are using the GPS radio, 3G radio and heavy display time.

There's an app called Locus. It'll download the maps to your phone for free, but doesn't do turn by turn. Its a good app if you just need to locate where you are, then zoom out to find an exit/street. I've downloaded the maps via wifi at the hotel, then gone out with the phone with no problems. Its gotten me out of a mess or 2, but not turn by turn.
