Step-by-Step Guide to Getting a Taxi at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)

BKK Terminal Map

Source: AOT

MAP KEY

Arrival Gates - Level Two
Immigration
Baggage Claim Carousels
Customs and Exits to Landside Terminal Area
Elevators/Escalators to Ground Floor Level One
Numbered Exits to Outside (taxi queues are near exits 4 & 7)

WHAT TO DO

Taxis accept cash only. There are ATMs and currency exchangers inside the terminal.
  • Take an elevator or escalator down to the ground level.
  • Follow the signs to one of the two taxi queues outside of the terminal on Level One.
  • The taxi queue attendant will ask your destination and write it on a taxi slip. UPDATE: There are no longer attendants to write your destination at BKK. You get a slip from a touchscreen kiosk which directs you to a parking stall number where you meet your car/driver.
  • The larger part of the taxi slip is yours to keep, the smaller part goes to your driver. Be sure to keep your taxi slip as it contains information you will need if a problem arises. Do not give your portion of the taxi slip to the driver, even if he asks for it. UPDATE: There is no portion of the new slip from the kiosk to give the driver.

BASE COST
  • Airport Fee - THB 50 per taxi levied from the airport (never to the airport)
  • THB 35 - flag drop through 1km
  • +THB 5.50/km for kilometers 1+ through 10
  • +THB 6.50/km for kilometers 10+ through 20
  • +THB 7.50/km for kilometers 20-40
  • +THB 2 per minute waiting or standing in traffic (less than 6kph)

TOLLS
  • THB 75 to city center (two toll booths)
  • THB 60 to DMK

SAMPLE FARES FROM BKK TO...
Amounts are approximate and will vary with traffic, specific drop point, etc.
  • City Center - THB 170-200
  • Grand Palace - THB 215
  • Don Mueang Airport (DMK) - THB 290
  • Hua Hin - THB ___ (typically a negotiated flat fee)
  • Pattaya - THB ___ (typically a negotiated flat fee)

FARE CALCULATOR TOOLS
Reasonably accurate fare estimates are available from a number of websites and apps. These services provide estimated base fares only. Calculations do not include traffic, tolls, airport fees, etc. Reliability varies - use at your own risk.
FAQs

Q: Should I use the hotel's airport transfer service instead of a taxi?A: It depends on your comfort zone, budget, time of day, number of people/bags, etc. In general, the cost will probably be about two to three times the typical taxi fare, or more. If you are relatively new to Asia, it might be a bit overwhelming, and you might find it reassuring to see someone holding a sign with your name as you walk out of baggage claim.
Q: Is it best to take the expressway or surface streets?A: Depending on your destination and time of day, surface streets might be quicker and/or shorter. However, expressway tolls will usually add less than THB 200 to the trip (see above), so you may wish to defer to your driver.

Q: What types of scams should I watch for?A: The most common thing you'll encounter is taxi drivers who do not want to use the meter. They will often ask for a flat fee that is usually much higher than the meter would register. If a driver refuses to use the meter, it's best to exit the taxi and get another. Do not get angry or argue with the driver. If a driver demands more money on arrival at your hotel, wait until your bags have been offloaded from the vehicle, then seek out a porter or other hotel employee to assist you. Again, do not get angry or argue with the driver. A driver may say there is a THB 50 fee to go to the airport. There is no fee to go TO the airport. If the fee is mentioned at the outset, get out and flag down a new taxi. If it is mentioned upon arrival at the airport, remove all your belongings from the taxi and calmly state that there is no such fee while handing over the metered amount. If the driver is insistent, offering to call over a police officer to assist will usually put an end to the discussion.

Q: What is the most common meter scam?
A: Very often, when you enter the taxi, the meter is obscured with a rag or towel, so you do not see that it has been running prior to your entrance,
and is now well over 100 Baht. Always ensure that you observe the driver starting the meter.
Q: If the driver does scam me, how much money are we talking about?A: Usually no more than THB 200-300, which is about USD 7-10
Q: I think I still have other questions...A: Just hit the reply button and get feedback from other helpful FlyerTalkers who take Bangkok taxis regularly!

Q: This all sounds like hassle. Is there some way I can use a small amount of money to make that go away?A: The AOT limo stands before and immediately after customs are trustworthy, although their initial quote will be for their most expensive vehicle. Ask for the Isuzu SUV. You'll be looking at 1,050THB / $33.50 to the center of town, inclusive of all fees and fares, and a small increment on that for a sedan. Credit cards are accepted. You will get a printed receipt before you get in the taxi. The vehicle will be well-driven, clean, and will have seatbelts.

I believe you can get a virtual keyboard on google for Thai.

Your situation is exactly why I only keep luggage in the trunk when there's no other option. You aren't alone in having been hit by this kind of situation.

A few years ago a taxi "meter" racked up about double the usual charge (route I had taken often, 4 am so no traffic) - when I got to the airport and my luggage was out of car I told the driver that the meter was too high (politely) - no one else around except other taxis. He grabbed my backpack from me and threatened to punch me (made a fist with arm raised). I'm an older female (quite small) so this was REALLY scary - eventually gave him a little less than the meter but more than it should have been. Ever since I've gone out of my way to only take green and yellow taxis (which are owned as opposed to leased for the day - but I guess the owner can lease it as well) b/c the taxi was a pink one.
This was before there was a reporting mechanism - BUT given the very small fine they levy (see my post below in Jan 9) there certainly isn't much of an incentive by the powers that be to do much/anything about the problem!
I can't count the amount of revenue they've lost as I've avoided taxi's whenever possible b/c this - but the Thai way is not to consider/worry about the long term

Exactly why I want my driver reported. You’d think he would know when I was handing him the toll money that he wasn’t dealing with a newbie. I wonder if there is a way for him to flip the meter from scam mode to normal mode or vice versa depending on the passenger. If it ever happens again, I will certainly deal with it differently. And it’s not because of the couple of bucks difference. BTW, mine was a green taxi.

I’ve started using the train to get downtown when I don’t have a super early or super late flight. I usually only have carry on luggage but this time I had a large (mostly empty) second suitcase that I was dropping off in SIN.

It could be viewed as pejorative but the reality is you're not Thai and therefor clueless. You can speak Thai to the driver and they'd still think you're ripe to be scammed.

I am a regular traveler to BKK and I’m quite familiar with drivers not wanting to use a meter. However, I had a new issue last week and I’d like to report a driver. I took a cab at 6 am from the Athenee to the airport. About 1/3 of the way there, I noticed that the meter was reading 270 baht. I innocently/stupidly said to the driver “I think there’s something wrong with your meter”. He got very angry and said it’s 450-500 baht to the airport, so I just slunk back into my seat and didn’t say anything else. I did start taking pictures though. I have a picture of the driver, the final meter reading at BKK (463 baht), his license plate and the time/route we travelled from my driving app. (I also gave him 75 baht for tolls when I got into the taxi.)

He knew I was angry, but what could I do. I had luggage in the trunk and didn’t want to be dropped off on the highway. When we got to BKK, he said he’d drop the price to 400 baht. (In retrospect, I should have given him 300 and walked away.) As he was pulling away, he yelled at me “F*ck you”.

I sent all my pics to the Athenee, but have no way to know if they did anything with them. I really want to report this guy if only because he thought he could take advantage of a woman traveling alone. I tried to Google how to report a BKK driver but didn’t really find anything. Is there a way to punish this lowlife?
Hi, margarita girl. Sorry to hear about your troubles. A couple of ideas for you.

If you have someone who can speak Thai, ask him/her to call the Royal Thai Police taxi complaint line. They actually do their job. Here's my experience: Link. (The fine was 10,000 baht.) Having a cellphone photo of the driver's license is more effective than a photo of the license plate, as you can see. The hotel isn't really going to do anything for you on this type of problem.

Here's another way you can handle it, again relating my own, personal experience. Link.

Great stories. I can’t wait to get back to BKK and jump in a cab. LOL

BTW, I do have a profile picture of the driver (taken from back seat) and my screenshot of driving app shows exact time and place of ride.

Seems like the fare (meter reading) should have been more in the range of 265 - 300? This range is due to traffic surcharges, for each minute the vehicle is stopped, even if at a traffic light.

I'm guessing the taxi was queued up near the hotel? Or was it dropping someone off? Or did the hotel call the taxi?

Most people avoid taxis waiting near hotels, to the extent that they can.

I wouldn't hand over the toll payment until approaching each individual toll gate, that's the local custom. At the airport, I wouldn't pay until outside the vehicle with all my bags in hand. In this case I would have paid the 463 baht.

Maybe use Grab (/Car or /Taxi) or LineMan Taxi next time? Right now, Grab is quoting 406 THB for this trip. (Athenee to SBIA/BKK door #5 ).

The doorman called a taxi for me. I had to wait 1-2 minutes. I saw the meter running and thought all was fine.

The driver is the one who offered to knock the fare down to 400 presumably because he saw me taking pictures. I checked Grab before asking for a taxi, and I thought it was too high at 385 baht. That will teach me. LOL

Lesson learned. Happens to all of us.

IME, over hundreds (maybe a thousand +) of taxi journeys you are much, much, much better off paying a premium for a Grab or LineMan vehicle.

Very generally speaking I will flag down a moving available taxi (or one stopped in traffic at a light, say at a BTS station), open the rear, curbside door, state my destination and the word meter and wait for a positive response. If I sense any hesitation I say thank you, close the door gently and move on to the next taxi. There are usually police near the BTS taxi/motorcy stands so normally you see very little issue, especially if there is a queue of people.

In all other cases (areas with no moving taxis nearby), I use Grab or LineMan.

I sometimes arrange a taxi to the airport the day before, with a local reliable taxi driver, for a fixed fee, usually 400 THB, and I pay tolls. This is when I have an early AM pick-up, say 04:30.

The doorman called a taxi for me.

The doorman gets a kickback from the taxi driver.

The Athenee doorman didn't give you a taxi card?

The reason I ask is that they are supposed to record the taxi# in case you have a problem or leave something behind. You can use that info in the report.

I often do, but not this time.

Another habit that I have in BKK is to take a picture of the license plate before I get in the car in full view of the driver. Of course, this time I didn't. Sigh.

Most hotels also record themselves the taxi number and keep it, besides giving you the card.

OMG, it just happened again, but in SGN this time. I must have SUCKER written on my forehead. Anyhow, I'm almost glad the BKK cabbie got me warmed up with his mere 100% mark up. In SGN, the meter read 760K VND (US$32) from airport to hotel! The driver conveniently "missed" the entrance to the hotel and wanted to drop me off at the street. I said no, take me to hotel. I refused to get out. So he started dropping his price. He went to 250K, then 200K, then 150K. I offered him 100K because he was a criminal, but he wouldn't go any lower than 150K (US$6) which I knew was in the right ballpark so I paid it. Sheesh! 500% mark up. That's not greedy is it?

I only take VinaSun and MaiLinh taxis in SGN. 100-150k to D1 has been the range I've paid.
