About 6 years ago, I was going to The Gaylord for an event, but wanted an extra night in the area beforehand (without paying the event prices). I ended up at the Doubletree Market Center, which was much more reasonably priced...and was even upgraded to a suite. It was an older property, but certainly adequate (I've staying in better and worse).
Some time before that (probably 11-12 years ago), I missed a connection CLT-PHX and ended up flying CLT-DFW, DFW-PHX, with just a few hours at DFW. I stayed at a Doubletree very close to the airport (north side) on points. It wasn't nearly as nice as the one at Market Center. I didn't have a car, and the shuttle was very slow in both directions. The room (for the limited time I was there) was adequate, but I wouldn't want to stay there more than a night.
There are threads in the hotel forums that focus on properties in specific geographic areas. If you prefer one chain, I'd visit that forum and find the thread (let me know if you have trouble using the search; it isn't the easiest to figure out).

Thanks AZtimm. I plan to get a vehicle as I think the hotel savings will outweigh the rental cost.
I could definitely post this request in Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt forums but just wanted to see if anyone had any recs. Would like a decent room as it will be 4 nights - the lounge and breakfast are of lesser concern.

Marriott Autograph Collection Hotel Vin is probably the nicest hotel in Grapevine. It's also the only hotel in the interesting, walkable part of Grapevine. Plenty of non-chain restaurants north of there on Grapevine's charming Main Street. Hotel Vin is adjacent to the TexRail station so there's public transit between there and DFW Terminal B.

As for the Hyatt Place Las Colinas, it is an older property, a bit tired. BUT, always sufficient, everything works, clean, and quiet. Breakfast is always fresh, restocked with ample options (for a Hyatt Place).
This property is accessible by the DART Light Rail from Terminal A at DFW. 15 minutes to the Hidden Ridge stop. Then maybe a three minute walk.
Please exercise all due caution when using DART Light Rail (open drug use, smells like actual feces, violence).
Another Hyatt option is the on-airfield newer DFW Hyatt Place. Wonderful property overall, shuttle runs frequently. Or can use the Rental Car Shuttle, then its maybe a few hundred yards walk (thru the administration building parking garage).
As for the Hotel Vin (Autograph Collection) in Grapevine, it is also accessible by public transit. Take the newer TEXRail Train from Terminal B. About a ten minute ride. Very nice train, but as I recall, it runs infrequently.

Ive got an upcoming layover, landing 19:30 and departing 10:00 the following morning. Never been to Dallas before so was thinking about jumping in an Uber to stay Downtown in the hope of seeing something the city has to offer - worthwhile?
If answer to the above is no, which off-site hotel has something to offer? I cant really justify the 3-400 rates the two terminal hotels are asking on my dates, but spoilt for choice elsewhere. Does anywhere have a roof top bar with views, something very local to see some culture, standard rooms with a good night time view etc?
Gosh this airport and vicinity seem massive so thanks in advance!

If you want some ideas for things to do, our local (Austin) PBS station has a show called, "Texas Daytripper." They did a few episodes on Dallas, here is one:

Based on your time, I'd pick either downtown Dallas or Fort Worth, find a place to stay, and stick to that. I've been to Fort Worth, and it has a walkable area as well, and the stockyards. But in that limited time, you won't really be able to get out to South Fork or anything further out (well maybe you can catch a Rangers game if you like baseball, you'd be late as they start at 7pm, but you might get in for free).

Hotel For AA Award Layover In DFW
We have AA award flights for September:
BA , Dubrovnik to LHR
AA, LHR to DFW (evening arrival)
AA, DFW to Tampa (departs the next morning)
The layover in LHR is 65 minutes, so there is a really, really good chance we'll miss our connection. However, going on the assumption that a miracle will occur, I am looking for a decent hotel in the DFW airport area. I'm not a cheapie, but $100 or less seems like enough to spend for a few hours. We are a party of two.
Any hotel suggestions without bed bugs, scary guests, and horrible airport noise? A bonus will be a free 24 hour shuttle, and liberal cancellation policy.
Thank you.

Fly it, see what happens, and worry about it then. There's a thousand permutations of how you will be re-accommodated if you miss the LHR connection. You likely *not* to be re-rerouted via DFW. If you do find yourself stuck at DFW, Grand Hyatt would be my rec and use your UK261 compensation towards the bill if it exceeds the budget.

Unfortunately, most hotels these days have a 24- or 48-hour cancellation policy, so if you book in advance and misconnect in London, you'll probably be out of luck. And any hotel (or airplane) can have bedbugs.
If you're willing to wait to see if you make your connection, I would probably try a Priceline "Express Deal," and specify only three- and four-star hotels with an airport shuttle.
If you have Hyatt points (or Chase UR points which can be converted to Hyatt points), there are two Hyatt Place properties near DFW, each of which offers a free airport shuttle and a free breakfast buffet; for this Saturday night, rooms are available for 8,000 points. (Hyatt has full-service properties at the airport, but they will be more expensive than the HP properties.)
If you misconnect in London, BA will be responsible for re-routing you, and for providing duty-of-care food and lodging during your overnight in London. (You could probably ask for BA's LGW-TPA nonstop if you don't mind getting over to Gatwick.)

I live in the area and can say our hotels here are generally really cheap overall. Unless you're flying through on some major event day you'll likely find last minute accommodations that are reasonably priced. For example, tonight there is a holiday inn express near the airport that is $86 tonight. Safe area of Irving, TX. I'd personally roll without a reservation and cross that bridge if you need to. Most if not all hotels are going to have a 24 hour cancellation policy.

Thank you all! I was kidding about the bed bugs. So my follow up questions:
1. If we misconnect in London, would BA pay for the transfer to Gatwick airport to catch the direct flight to Tampa?
2, When we misconnected in London two years ago, the BA agent did not give us a choice, and put us on Virgin Air. What are our rights for choosing our new fligthts? We are on an economy award with AA Mileage Plus seats, and husband is AA Lifetime Platinum.
3. I don't have a Priceline account. Can I use booking.com to get our last minute hotel in DFW just as well?
Thanks again!
