Excruciatingly slow today, I'm pulling my hair out!

Is this a separate issue from the DOS attack a couple weeks ago? FT hasn't been the same since. :(

This post took me 15 minutes and 5 attempts to post.

It's not too bad here, although I agree - slower than usual.

This is 100% related to the still ongoing cyber attacks. We are working around the clock to restore access to normal. We appreciate your patience and apologize for the inconvenience.

Maybe fixing a reason behind these cyber "attacks" might help?

Software licensing can be a tough business. But if you're able to build a great product and acquire customers, it can be a rewarding business. The founders of Jelsoft, the company behind the popular vBulletin message board software, know that first hand....

Every company makes mistakes and on the internet, chances are your customers won't hesitate to let you know when you make one. There are a lot of ways to deal with unhappy customers and if you're looking to preserve your internet brand, giving your customers even more to be unhappy about probably isn't the best way to go about it

It is especially slow when it comes to posting.

goalie Dec 2, 2009 2:00 pm

something's up as it's now crawling along at 1pm pst with pages drawing blank, no icons for posting, quoting and etc (just the generic blue squares with a question mark in it)

Hvr Dec 4, 2009 4:41 pm

I am finding the very slow posting issue a problem here in Australia.

Quite often it times out and then you have to refresh a couple of times and sometimes you van get back and post other times it just dies completely.

videomaker Dec 5, 2009 9:16 am

Hate to say it, but FT is becoming unusable.

The site has been running slow as molasses for the last week. Even when the site comes up, often clicking on a thread results in a 404 error. Adding a post or RBP gives a page error, even though it apparently goes through.

I haven't seen any other major site that's experienced these chronic problems over the long term. I hope someone has a plan...

Hey, give Internet Brands a break. They're "looking into it," and it's only been 14 months of this. What's the hurry?

I'm about to give up and move on. I'm posting from my phone because the site is inaccessible, again, on the PC.

It doesn't appear that IB or its technical geniuses can solve this problem. Lots of traffic is a problem most site owners would love to have!

Unbelievable, really.

A little confused about this statement. Lots of traffic is not a problem most site owners would love to have...when the vast majority of that traffic is of the denial-of-service type!

(I agree it seems IB is not doing enough quickly enough to fix this--some reasonable-cost hardware solutions have been proposed numerous times.)

I obviously wasn't referring to DOS attacks, and I'm not convinced that is what is causing FT's longterm and ongoing problems.

Whatever it is, it needs to be fixed. I've never seen it take this long on any other "major" site. I would think FT's owners would want to move quickly to preserve their business.

When you're having problems staying logged in, it's almost always an issue with your cookies. If you delete all your cookies for flyertalk and log back in, this should fix the problem.

One of the biggest complaints about IB is our lack of communication with the forum members. Because of this, we try to keep you informed with the information we have available. When a problem is reported, we look into it. To let you know that we're looking onto it, we tell you so. If we don't tell you that we're looking into it, you get upset that we're not looking into it.

Your quotes above are for a number of different problems. Yes, there have been multiple problems of varying degree over the last 14 months. Yes, for most of these problems we've told you that we're looking at them. Would you rather that we not let you know that we're addressing the problems that you report?

Dovster Dec 7, 2009 12:21 pm

While I'm not particularly comfortable speaking for cblaisd, and I suspect he is even more uncomfortable having me do so, I am going to take a wild guess here and say that what he would really prefer is having these problems fixed.

A number of us have been posting on FT for years and there have always been problems from time to time, but nothing like we have seen in the past year or so.

It has gotten to the point that every time I make a post I cut and paste it onto Notebook because I've just had too many disappear after clicking "Submit Reply".

The current situation is, to put it politely, ridiculous.

False dilemma.

Fourteen months is a long time to have so many multiple, incessant problems. Folks here have been very, very patient.

The fact that you can even refer to having perennial complaints (plural) says more than you realize.

I'm trying to think of another website that has even had, say, three months (or two, or just a single month) of problem after problem.

True, but unfortunately that appears not to be possible. (Despite the multiple offers from people on FT who do know IT stuff extremely well and have offered their expertise to assist. Such an offer would be presumptuous if we were talking about a week's worth of problems, but 14 months is a different matter).

On this one, you can speak for me indeed.

I'm not an IT guy by profession. But the fact that hundreds of thousands of other sites all over the world don't have these problems indicates to me they can be fixed.

Not in my part of the world. FT still intermittently hangs. It has been over a month since FT was last speedy for me :(

FT continues to be the slowest major website I've ever seen on the web.

What's today's excuse--hackers, denial of service attack, thread proliferation??? Or just don't know how to run a website?

uncertaintraveler Dec 15, 2009 2:30 pm

Running painfully slow at the moment.

Not in a few weeks, anyway. This is in ANC and connecting to FT from both of the major local telecom/Internet providers.

Yankeeflyer Dec 16, 2009 7:15 am

Still requires multiple attempts for me to load most pages. I find myself giving up more often or not. I'm not going to bash the technical folks, but just make the point that -- at some point -- people are going to start migrating away from FT....

If the page starts to 'hang', I simply press 'stop' and refresh and all is usually well........................until the next time!

IB-Dick Dec 16, 2009 12:35 pm

Just so everyone knows, we are still investigating the performance issues. Improving site speed and reliability is our top priority right now.

I used to come to FT every day (hmm maybe I was addicted :D), now I am dropping in on occasion when I feel patient.....its becoming less and less because the site is barely functional for me. Still not able to get into the Chat room, which I read was the top priority, until I saw this thread.
