Deserved apologies

I just want to say, sorry, Stormybot, as it's now clear that you did not know about the change, and it's not in your purview. We've all had occurrences like this in our organizations. But now, since they occurred at the same time, you guys in IT didn't know, but are caught up now, can you say if the other issues in this thread were related to the change, or coincidental? Or can you comment? Again, sorry for setting you up before, and don't answer this time if you can't. :(

We're working on the issue. Hopefully, everything will be worked out by the end of the day today. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Yeah, I've got a couple thousand emails telling me roughly the same thing! Thanks, though.... The more information the better, especially with problems like this that are intermittent and difficult to reproduce.

This problem has been tracked down and should no longer be an issue.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but FT has been VERY slow the last couple days, pages not loading, stuck "waiting" for the server to respond.

and waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting.

I don't know if it is the code used on the ads or the ad servers, or what, but i would say that "painfully slow" page loading is a good description.

Kagehitokiri Jun 28, 2009 5:47 pm

sometimes very slow.

and search isnt working.

Firewind Jul 6, 2009 6:43 pm

"Brought to you by..."

To the second problem in the title, I believe that I recently have been associating the loading slowness with the amount of activity in the banner ads at the top and the right margin. Not the simple jerky worms, birds or gyrating figures. But the more it's like a full-blown television commercial, the more going on per page, and the more often it changes (e.g., different commercials page to page) the longer the reload of content here in the center. I mention it now because I now don't believe it's my imagination.

I would add that it's the case in other websites I use, as well -- particularly TripAdvisor. Maybe it has to do with the nature of travel advertisement, as compared with, say, script, or mobile phones that move up into your face, or gyrating mortgage people...

Thx

I have notified tech of recent slowness reports and they are investigating.

Thx all -

We are looking at the DB now to get a handle on the speed. I will post as I learn more.

Thx for the update. We were experiencing some latency that has resolved however the problem seems to be intermittent so we will continue to monitor.

Very slow and lurchy today.

Slow / Timing out

I've been unable to access FT for most of the morning EST. It is coming back now, but running VERY slowly. Anyone else having trouble?

Gargoyle Nov 12, 2009 11:41 am

Wirelessly posted (Propel: SAMSUNG-SGH-I617/1.0 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6))

It seems FT has been down for a hour or two. FT Mobile is working, albeit slowly.

Aus_Mal Nov 12, 2009 11:55 am

I think the problems started around 3.5-4 hours ago, with some timeouts and general slowness.

Then the site was down for a couple of hours, and as commented (and I'm posting, so it must be true!), it's back up now although slow.

Hopefully will improve speed-wise soon, although my suspicion is that there was a database issue which has been resolved, but re-indexing is taking place (or something similar) and causing the ongoing issues.

Steph3n Nov 12, 2009 12:29 pm

The entire internetbrands network is bad, autos.com also not loading.

IB-Dick Nov 12, 2009 12:57 pm

We're having a network problem that we are currently working on. We appreciate your patience.

Lots of strange page loading patterns to boot.

uncertaintraveler Nov 12, 2009 12:59 pm

It would be nice if FT could/would send out a mass e-mail to every member letting them know of the problems.

All 100K+ members? That's a lot of people to let know that FT is having some network issues.

Maybe redirecting the website to a "FT is temporarily down. Site experiencing problems and will be up soon" would be a more viable option. But even that probably depends on the outage, the expected length of time down, etc.

At least it seems to be up and working again. ^

FT seemingly has not trouble sending out TalkMail newsletters to all the members. And the information contained therein is, in my view, a lot less useful than a notice that "FT is down" would be.

No argument from me on any of that.

I'm still getting numerous, but intermittent, "website not available" pages. Very annoying.

There is definitely some intermittent problems still going on. I have to click on a forum three times to get it to load properly and have had to re-write about a dozen posts that just vanished into ether-land.

Just tried to reply in another forum. Timed out. Tried again and it loaded immediately.

I've been getting numerous, but intermittent, "website not available" pages all day...still occurring at 5:43pm mst.

RCyyz Nov 12, 2009 7:33 pm

I think the network problems persist. At least I can get in now though.

tcook052 Nov 12, 2009 7:51 pm

I'd almost rather it didn't work at all instead of working poorly. Just MHO, of course.
